Essentials Inside The Story
- Panthers’ playoff hopes surged during their Week 14 bye
- David Tepper publicly backed Dave Canales and the front office
- Canales is stressing discipline and a 1-0 each week mindset
For the first time in years, the Carolina Panthers control their own destiny in December, a reality that solidified without them even taking the field. Dave Canales’ Carolina Panthers got a welcome surprise on their bye in week 14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ shocking loss to New Orleans Saints gives their playoff hopes a much-needed boost. While there are still four games to go, David Tepper is welcoming the success and turnaround the Panthers have enjoyed this season.

“It’s not that shabby,” Tepper said with a half-smile, addressing the gradual turnaround under Canales and general manager Dan Morgan at a recent Panthers event. “It’s pretty good, it’s all building blocks and we’ll see where we go, we’ll see what happens.”

Tepper went so far as to name his leadership group directly: “But we do think that Dan Morgan, Tillis, and everybody here in the whole organization, I think we’re building something special in Carolina.”

The inclusion of Dan Morgan, and executive Vice President of Football Operations Brandt Tillis signals a widening circle of trust. After years of coaching turnover, failed experiments, and unfulfilled expectations, Tepper’s faith appears rooted in process and culture.
The numbers back that optimism. After a 5–12 campaign in 2024, Carolina has surged to a 7–6 start under Canales, already surpassing last year’s win total and making an improbable climb into division contention. It’s the closest they’ve been to a postseason in recent years.

More importantly, Tepper’s public tone shifted dramatically as well. His comments strongly indicated the franchise was moving beyond the band-aid fixes onto a cohesive, long-range identity-something other NFL contenders have proven essential in building perennial success, from the Baltimore Ravens to the San Francisco 49ers.
That move comes at the most crucial time. With only four games remaining, Carolina can directly control the division race. Tepper’s support ensures Canales enters this stretch without noise, without speculation, and without the shadow of uncertainty that generally remains over rebuilding teams.

Canales stresses discipline amid playoff boost
While the Panthers did not take the field in Week 14, their path to the playoffs became a bit clearer thanks to the Buccaneers. The Panthers aren’t chasing anymore. But amidst the emotional shift, Canales is keeping the message tight: focus on the next step, not the standings.

Coming back off the bye, he reminded players that the margin of error remains thin.
“The goal is to go 1-0 this week with a chance to win the division,” he said following Monday’s practice. “It’s right there in front of us. … We have a group of guys that were excited to be back knowing what we’re playing for.”

Canales acknowledged the importance of that Saints-Bucs game, even going so far as to say he watched with interest, but tempered that by saying scoreboard-watching cannot take the place of execution.
“We missed some opportunities in the past game, and the Saints did a great job of challenging us in the run game,” he said.
If Carolina capitalizes on this moment, sweeping Tampa or closing out the final month strong, that playoff berth could be the start of something much bigger.
