After starting the offseason a little later than 2/3 of the NFL teams, Matt LaFleur and the Packers are desperately adjusting pieces in the roster. Talk about free agency? The Packers have signed Aaron Banks, Nate Hobbs, Mecole Hardman, and Kristian Welch while moving on from seven free agents of the previous year’s roster. As the Packers get closer and closer to drafts in 2025, LaFleur’s eye is on this one dynamic wide receiver. Although LaFleur’s locker room currently has 72 players, one spot remains open for that 1,975-yard wide receiver.

Many sources report that two teams are showing interest in this talented wide receiver. According to reporter Dane Brugler, “Texas WR Matthew Golden has accepted an invitation to attend the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay. Golden in the conversation to be the first WR drafted.” This update came after the Bills also showed interest in Matthew Golden. But you might be wondering why these teams are so interested in him.

Well, we get an idea if we observe how Golden became Golden in his college years with lightning performances. The Texas Longhorns No. 2 owned the gridiron whenever he stepped onto the grass. In 2024, he made 58 receptions for 987 yards and landed crucial nine touchdowns, as his average stood at 17 yards.

If we take a quick snapshot of his whole career with the Longhorns, it’s not hard to understand how Matthew Golden earned what exposure he is getting today to NFL teams. In his three-year career in Texas, Matthew Golden received 134 passes for 1975 yards and scored staggering touchdowns. That’s why not only Matt LaFleur’s Packers but also Sean McDermott‘s Bills are interested in him. Well, let’s see if the Packers can draft him on the 1st day of the NFL 2025 drafts, that is, April 24, 2025.

But you know, while the Packers are busy focusing on the wide receiver position, LaFleur is also looking for a backup QB. And according to reports, it looks like they have got one.

They didn’t land anyone from free agency, where some reputed veterans were available for a brief window. But Matt LaFleur’s plan looks to be something different.

He appears to be looking to make the quarterback room a squad of young champs. To have a backup for Jordan Love, the Packers are aiming for Jalen Milroe, who was a standout at Alabama Crimson Tide. The quarterback threw 16 touchdowns in the 2024 season from 2,844 yards after making 205 out of 319 passes at a 64.3% completion rate. However, per CMP%, his best season was 2023, where he completed 187 out of 284 passes. More impressively, he used his feet well, bagging 20 rushing TDs on 726 yards from 168 attempts in 2024. His longest? A 72-yard run against LSU in a career-high 185-rushing-yards 4-rushing-TD showing on November 10.

The QB has accepted the invitation to attend the drafts, but according to many sources, ‘there’s a chance he won’t hear his name until Day 2.’ It’ll be interesting to see if LaFleur’s Packers could land Milroe and Golden in the drafts, or if another team swoops in to claim them. With several teams eyeing top talent, the competition could get intense in the coming days.
