The Green Bay Packers are going through a tight situation with their head coach, Matt LaFleur. The HC’s contract is running out, and the Packers are still figuring it out. While things appear to be sorted, the latest update on his market demand could send the franchise into a frenzy.

“I think the expectation and belief is that he is expected back in Green Bay and excited about that opportunity,” said ESPN’s Adam Schefter to Pat McAfee. “That’s the belief on both sides. So, we operate under the assumption that he’s gonna be back and they’re gonna figure it out. They’re working, trying to get it done. That’s what I expect to happen now. But they are not done.”
When asked about the market on LaFleur, Adam Schefter further added, “There’s gonna be a big market for Matt LaFleur. Because if the Green Bay Packers don’t work it out, Matt LaFleur will get more money from other teams, and there would be multiple teams in my mind that will be willing to step in and offer draft pick compensation to the Green Bay Packers to get it done.”

When the Packers signed LaFleur in 2019, his annual salary was $5 million. Four years ago, the franchise offered him a contract extension, taking his annual salary into the $8-$9 million range. Currently, he has only a year remaining in his contract. However, things are not the same as it was four years ago. The head coach market is pretty inflated, and it is natural for LaFleur to get a healthy raise.
Since taking charge in 2019, he has taken the Packers to three consecutive playoffs. In doing so, he set the record of becoming the first HC to take his team to three straight playoffs with 13 or more wins in the regular season. Also, 39 wins in the first three seasons is the most by any HC in the NFL. In his seven years as the Packers’ HC, he got them six postseason nods. To add a cherry on top, his record stands at 76-40-1 in the regular season, and 3-6 in the postseason. Naturally, his success speaks for itself.

Before becoming the HC in Green Bay, he was the offensive coordinator for the Rams (2017) and the Titans (2018). The Rams led the NFL’s scoring offense, scoring 478 points in 16 games. Unfortunately, his record in Tennessee was not that impressive. The Titans ranked 27th in total offense. But it can be reasoned out due to the injuries, especially after TE Delanie Walker’s injury in Week 1, and QB Marcus Mariota suffered the entire season with an incessant nerve injury.
Coming back to the Packers, if things do not progress, there are several options lurking in the open for the HC, the Steelers being an obvious one.

The Steelers could grab Matt LeFleur while it’s up in the air
Matt LeFleur is one of the hottest names in the NFL right now. The Packers are trying for an extension, but there’s no sure news as of now. Amid the contract negotiations, the NFL analysts have named several franchises that can benefit from the situation. One of the names that has popped up is the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“The first step I would [take] is then call Matt LaFleur, if I was the Pittsburgh Steelers, and I would jump at the opportunity to hire him,” ESPN‘s Orlovsky said on NFL Live via YouTube. “Then I would figure out a way to get Malik Willis as my quarterback. And then, all of a sudden, I’m in a situation where Pittsburgh now becomes a little more relevant because this fits that quarterback void they have.”

The Steelers parted ways with Mike Tomlin after the HC decided to step down after losing the Wild Card Game against the Texans. Tomlin was their coach for 19 years, and now the franchise could go for someone different, like LeFleur. He may bring in quarterback Malik Willis as a replacement for the aging Aaron Rodgers.

Willis has only played four games in the last season, but he has a quarterback rating of 93.1. With a 85.7% pass completion rate, he covered 422 passing yards and scored 3 touchdowns. As a rusher, he made 22 carries for 123 yards and scored two touchdowns. It highlights his dual-threat ability, which an aging Rodgers has been lacking.

Moreover, a head coach trade is nothing new in the NFL. In 2023, the Broncos traded in HC Sean Payton from the Saints in exchange for a first and a Day 2 swap. There is also the trade of Mike Holmgren from the Packers to the Seahawks for a second-round pick in 1999.
Other than the Steelers, eight other franchises have fired their HCs. They have already begun their HC hunt. As Adam Schefter said, they will be happy to give up draft pick compensation for someone of LaFleur’s stature. Now, it remains to be seen who takes the action first. Is it the Packers, or a different franchise? Neither the Packers nor their HC will want to extend things.
