Four weeks into the season, veteran broadcaster Al Michaels has already messed up more than once. Calling the Steelers vs. Browns game on Thursday Night Football, he’s messed up a player’s alma mater yet again.

Midway through the first quarter, Cleveland defensive tackle Mason Graham went down with an injury. As he was being attended to on the field, here’s what Michaels said:

Only Mason Graham went to Michigan, not Michigan State. Wolverine fans know the weight that name carries, even though he plays for an enemy camp now.

Graham played three years for the maize and blue and made two First-team All-Big Ten honors. He is also a 2023 Second-team All-American and a 2024 Unanimous All-American. Graham is also 3-0 against OSU and was part of the 2023 National Championship-winning team at Michigan.

Graham made an impact from the get-go. He started in the Wolverine D-line as a freshman, and eventually went on to win the team’s Defensive Freshman of the Year honor. He wasn’t a highly sought-after recruit coming out of high school, but Graham proved to be a star.

He finished with more than 100 tackles and nine sacks, and was the anchor in the Wolverines’ defensive line’s interior. In 2024, against the then-second-ranked Buckeyes in Columbus, Graham registered a season-high eight tackles, including six within 2 yards of the line of scrimmage, helping Michigan upset Ohio State 13-10.

This season, Mason Graham has four sacks through just three weeks and is tied with Houston Texans’ Will Anderson Jr. for the second-most sacks in the league. Last year, he’d recorded only half a sack; Graham was off to create something really good in his second season this year.

Having been one of the strongest defensive weapons in Michigan, this mistake makes for a bad look on Al Michaels.

Previously, Michaels had messed up Michael Penix Jr.’s college. He’d said the quarterback had “two great years at Oregon.” However, Penix played his final two college seasons at Washington.

That wasn’t his only error in this game. Michaels mixed up running back Bijan Robinson with Brian Robinson.

The veteran broadcaster will turn 82 this year. Mistakes have been noted by viewers in the past too, who have long called for him to retire. During the Rams-49ers game in October 2025, Michaels was slow to pick up things and was even confused by the 49ers advancing 15 yards after the Rams were flagged for roughing the passer.

Despite all these concerns, Prime Video still signed him to a one-year contract earlier this year. And he does not plan on retiring as long as his health permits him to be behind the mic.

“First of all, I feel great,” he told Sports Business Journal. “Everyone at Amazon has been fantastic and I love working with this group. I’ve been looking at this year one year at a time and as long as I feel I’m at the top of my game, I’d like to continue.

Although Michaels isn’t ready to retire, his year-to-year contracts with Prime Video give him the flexibility to leave at any time. However, Prime Video reportedly has his replacement in place.

“While Michaels’ future plans are still undetermined, Prime Video has CBS’ No. 2 NFL play-by-player Ian Eagle on the top of its list to succeed him on ‘Thursday Night Football.’ Eagle is already Prime Video’s top NBA play-by-player. Eagle is in the final year of his CBS contract,” The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand reported.

After messing up Graham’s college, fans launched into a fresh set of calls for Michael’s retirement, as has been for the previous few times he’s made mistakes.

“Someone take Al Michaels to Old 86 and then take his a** to bed. Dude has no idea what’s going on. #Browns,” a fan wrote.

“I love that Al Michaels just gets to say incorrect things and it doesn’t matter,” called out a fan.

“I love Al Michaels but someone needs to tell him to retire,” wrote a fan.

“Al Michaels go away,” read a comment.

“Turned my tv off mute for 5 seconds to hear what Mason Graham’s injury was… Al Michaels immediately says he went to Michigan State😭😭 I’m sick,” an upset fan wrote.

“On a side note, they’ve gotta get Al Michaels outta the booth,” read a comment.

Will Prime Video perhaps be forced to make a move? We will have to wait and watch.
