Tyreek Hill became a free agent after the Miami Dolphins released him in February 2026, months after a devastating knee injury ended his final season with the team. During Miami’s Week 4 game against the New York Jets on September 29, 2025, Hill dislocated his left knee and tore multiple ligaments, including his ACL. The injury required surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process. But recovery is not the only obstacle to his NFL return.

Hill is currently engaged in a civil lawsuit after his estranged wife, Keeta Vaccaro, accused him of domestic abuse. Hill is currently engaged in a civil lawsuit after his estranged wife, Keeta Vaccaro, accused him of domestic abuse.
The couple became engaged on July 4, 2021, briefly separated and later reunited before marrying in November 2023. Hill testified that he filed for divorce in January 2024, partly because of a disagreement over a postnuptial agreement. He later withdrew the filing, and the couple attended therapy together.
The case has now reached trial in Miami, and the two have testified. On October 8, 2026, Hill testified that he was “deeply ashamed” of threatening Vaccaro and denied her allegations of physical abuse. However, his account of an encounter that left a hole in a wall differed across two days of testimony.
However, the NFL has put its own investigators to work to dig out the truth. Even if Hill’s attorneys manage to convince the jury, Hill will have to face judgment from the league. And Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio pointed out that in case the NFL’s investigators find Vaccaro’s version of the truth more believable, Hill could face a significant suspension.
According to ESPN’s Xuan Thai and The Athletic’s Adam Kilgore, Hill wishes to have handled the situation in a better way when he had an argument with his estranged wife in 2024. He wished he could take the harsh words back.
“I did make statements about she wasn’t safe,” the WR said. “I did make statements about me being able to get people to hurt her. Now looking back, I wish I could have handled that situation a whole lot better. I wish I could have talked to my wife better. I just wish I could take it all back. At the end of the day, my real mom and my sister, they wanted to do some things to her. But they knew at the end of the day, she was the love of my life and I’d do anything to protect her, bro. It was just the heat of the moment. All those things came out during that argument.”
Additionally, during the fight in 2025 that led to the divorce filings, Hill revealed that the couple’s nanny camera captured the entire incident along with the audio. And the jury saw the video during Hill’s testimony. The video showed the former couple engaging in verbal expletives. It didn’t show Hill engaging in physical abuse. Vaccaro’s mother, who was present at the court, testified that she never saw Hill physically hurting Vaccaro.
“I told her that night, I said, ‘Don’t you ever touch me in your life,’” Hill said about the embarrassing encounter. “I pushed her against the wall, and I tried to force her to get off me. I created a hole in the wall trying to force her to get off me that night.”
But during cross-examination on Friday, October 9, Hill gave a different account. He said a door caused the hole as he tried to evade Vaccaro and maintained that he was not trying to hurt her or push her against the wall. That explanation differed from his testimony a day earlier, when he said he had pushed her against it while trying to get her off him.
Thai also reported that Hill’s agent could be negotiating a new contract in the NFL. But if he returns, can he get back with the Kansas City Chiefs?
Will Tyreek Hill return to Kansas City once the legal troubles settle down?
Sports journalist Rob Parker doesn’t believe that Kansas City is a good option for Hill to return to. During his appearance on Fox Sports Radio, Parker told Hill not to go to the Chiefs “under any circumstances.” He believed that the receiver shouldn’t help the people who had no money for him, even after he helped them win a Super Bowl.
The argument stems from the way the Chiefs handled Hill in the past. They decided to move on from him and traded him to Miami instead of meeting his financial expectations. And now that Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton are injured, the Chiefs have developed a renewed interest in Hill.
Meanwhile, Albert Breer believes that Kansas City could be a good spot for Hill to resume his NFL career. Breer acknowledged on The Dan Patrick Show that the receiver is out of the league because of something more than just an injury. And according to him, injuries are already pretty difficult to return from. But his relationship with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs could play a role in his return.
“I know he’s still got a relationship with Mahomes,” Breer said. “I think the Chiefs receiver situation is dire enough now with the injuries to Tyquan Thornton and Rashee Rice, where, you know, maybe they feel like they have to make a move.
“You would think that it would be pretty seamless reincorporating him with Eric Bieniemy there. There are a lot of reasons to think why there are a lot of reasons to believe that Tyreek Hill would make sense there.”
But before any franchise bets on his comeback, the looming threat of an NFL suspension could completely derail his career restart.
