“I’m focused on winning… what I can do as quarterback of the New York Giants to help us win and lead,” Russell Wilson declared that with his signature confidence on the introductory news conference. Let’s rewind a little: Wilson signed a one-year deal with the Steelers in 2024 and looked like a rebooted franchise QB. From Weeks 7 through 14, he led Pittsburgh to a 6-1 stretch, threw for 1,784 yards, 12 touchdowns, and just three picks. The offense, for once, was alive. And now, he’s planning the comeback tour, already throwing darts at Georgia Tech with Malik Nabers in tow.

However, another Giants quarterback is switching sports back in Jersey, while Russell Wilson is accumulating chemistry reps down south. Literally. Tommy DeVito took a bat in his hands. Not a football. A bat.

The local folk hero posted a waist-down photo of himself holding a baseball bat while wearing white batting gloves on his Instagram Story, with Future’s Solo playing in the background. The caption? Just three dots: “…” Translation: ‘I’m not talking, but I’m watching.‘ Or even better, ‘Y’all forgot about me.‘ Was it simply boredom? After all, in a QB room now crowded with Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and the ever-looming possibility of a new shiny rookie, DeVito’s place feels uncertain.

Tommy DeVito signed a one-year contract worth $1.03 million with no guarantees. He is familiar with the locker room and the offense. “I think I bring a certain confidence, energy, swag, whatever you call it. If you don’t enjoy going out there, you don’t play with the same kind of passion,” he said in 2024. DeVito rushed for 166 yards, threw eight touchdowns, and completed about 64% of his passes in his six starts. He is the QB to lead the Giants to a 30-point game—a 31-19 win over Washington. He is also the quarterback to get an NFC Offensive Player of the Week nod, after cooking the Packers on Monday Night Football in 2024.

Still, the Giants are simply looking at every candidate with a pulse. And while DeVito’s post screamed, “read between the lines,” the real noise is coming from inside the building. Since Tommy is swinging silently, Winston is content to play backup, and Russell may be announcing himself as QB1—but Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen? They’re not even calling plays from the same script anymore.

Russell Wilson’s arrival sparks a silent war within the Giants

The only place messier than the Giants’ performance from the previous season is their front office. Russell Wilson has declared that he’s the starter. “I expect to be the starter and come in here and be ready to rock and roll every day.” And if that wasn’t enough, Wilson doubled down with the company pitch: “I’m focused on winning, and focused on what I can do as quarterback of the New York Giants to help us win and lead.”

Russ is already practicing with Darius Slayton and Malik Nabers, gaining reps like it’s Week 1, while Giants fans are thinking about Shedeur Sanders. And Jameis Winston? He is the one you want in the room, but not the one in charge. However, there is more to this quarterback drama, it concerns who is making decisions off the field.

According to Dianna Russini, this isn’t a classic split—it’s a strategic cold war. “The situation remains fluid with what the Giants will do at the top of the draft. But that doesn’t mean their building is split, despite these late QB workouts. I can tell you from what I can gather after having some conversations, this is less about coming to a final decision for the Giants, but more about collecting as much information as possible. To be prepared for as many situations that can happen. Because I think there’s a thought out there that if they’re watching workouts this late, then they must be split in the building.”

What’s your perspective on:

Is Russell Wilson the savior the Giants need, or just another name in the QB carousel?

In other words, Daboll wants a voice. Schoen wants options. And Russ simply wants everyone to get in formation behind himThe building still feels uneasy regardless of how many elite prospects the Giants host, like the plan is being written in pencil with a GM on one end and a head coach on the other.

And here’s the kicker: Wilson knows it. If the Giants do take a quarterback? Don’t expect Russ to throw a welcome parade. “I’m here to compete. I’m here to win. I’ve never walked into a building without that mindset.” Translation: Mentor? Sure. Placeholder? No.
