Mahomes was injured on December 14, 2025, during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 15 game at Arrowhead Stadium against the Los Angeles Chargers. He suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) in his left knee when he was hit from behind while trying to escape pressure late in the game. He was helped off the field and did not return to the game.

Mahomes underwent successful surgery in Dallas to repair both the ACL and LCL the next day. Chiefs’ medical staff say Mahomes has started rehabilitation, and the recovery from the knee surgery is expected to take around nine months, though that timeline could be a month or two shorter or longer. This means he is aiming to be ready for the start of the 2026 season rather than returning this year. But before his injury, fans had heavily critiqued the Chiefs’ QB.

Why was Patrick Mahomes criticized by fans?

Before the injury, Mahomes had been heavily critiqued by fans. It was all because of how the Chiefs performed throughout this season. The 2025 season hasn’t been a great one for the Kansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes and his team have struggled throughout the season and is in risk of missing the playoffs. The team has a 6–7 record in 2025, which is much worse than usual for a franchise that has been a consistent contender. Amid this, fans have even questioned whether this season harms Mahomes’ legacy.

In the 14 games that Mahomes played, he recorded 3587 passing yards and scored 22 passing touchdowns.

NBA star Kevin Durant took a firm public stance defending Mahomes. On the show Up & Adams, KD was asked if Mahomes’ legacy should be affected by a “down year.” Durant strongly rejected the idea, saying that one tough season should not change how people view Mahomes’ career and that his achievements make him one of the all-time greats. Rallying behind him, was Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, who. After Durant’s remarks gained traction online, Brittany commented, “Let them know.”

The 2025 season is statistically one of Mahomes’ weakest in his NFL career. Through 14 games, he has thrown for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, with the Chiefs holding a 6–8 record and eliminated from playoff contention after his season-ending injury. This is the first time in his career the Chiefs won’t make the postseason.
