In a game where the Detroit Lions dominated the Dallas Cowboys, 44-30, it was running back Jahmyr Gibbs who stole the headlines by etching his name into the NFL record books. The 23-year-old has been in red-hot form this year, scoring sixteen touchdowns in thirteen games. But he set a massive record in Michigan on December 4.

The NFL announced that Gibbs has scored the most touchdowns (47) before turning 24. He also equaled the legend Barry Sanders with his record-breaking performance.

The Lions identified his talent early and drafted him in the first round (12th overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft. He even earned the nickname ‘Sonic’ in his rookie season for his speed and agility. Gibbs ended his first career season with eleven touchdowns in fifteen games and had an almost 150% jump the next year, with twenty touchdowns in seventeen games.

This year, he has been explosive. In thirteen games, he has already scored sixteen total touchdowns (thirteen rushing + three receiving) for 1,536 total yards. Even in the rushing game alone, he is fourth in the league in touchdowns and yards (1,062). But the dangerous part about the Lions running back is his domination in many key areas over several legendary players.

Jahmyr Gibbs is on track to be an NFL legend

Many videos went viral after his mind-boggling performances in the 2025 season. One of them showed Jahmyr Gibbs talking to the Lions’ coaching staff during the NFL Combine. He showed them the eagle claw in which he gripped the ball in his hands, kept it closer to his chest and right biceps, and then clenched his wrist with his other hand. This made one thing clear: Gibbs isn’t joking with the ball.

This perfect technique has placed him among the NFL legends. After 45 games, Sanders had 5.0 yards per carry. Gibbs surpasses him with 5.5 yards per carry. He has already raced ahead of Jerry Rice (43 touchdowns) with 47 total touchdowns. He also broke the record of a legendary Cowboys running back.

The legendary Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith ran for 4,601 total yards in forty-five games. But Jahmyr Gibbs has broken his record with 4,726 total yards. This performance definitely puts him on a path to become one of the league’s legends. If he continues to play at the same pace, he could reach the top of the NFL history books much earlier.
