Running back David Montgomery recently gave a peek into his surprising past as a phenomenal high school quarterback during an appearance on Kay Adams‘ show, Up & Adams.

Montgomery, who joined the Detroit Lions in 2023, was asked by Kay Adams if his current offensive coordinator, John Morton (“Johnny Mo”), knew about the legendary “lore” of Mt. Healthy Fighting Owls quarterback.

Montgomery, as subtle as ever, responded, “I don’t think he does, just because I know I can throw it farther. But I don’t think he really knows much about it. But if you think about it, there are a lot of guys on our team who play quarterback who can throw the ball.” 

Kay Adams, however, was quick to push back, revealing the stunning Cincinnati high school stats: “This man threw for 726 yards while rushing for over 2,700 for the Mt. Healthy Fighting Owls.”

This provided a throwback to the multi-talented athlete before he became a starting NFL running back.

Montgomery especially painted his secret weapon during the 2024 season.

In a trick play against the Tennessee Titans (Week 8), he took a pitch from quarterback Jared Goff and then threw a touchdown pass to Sam LaPorta!

It was a rare and exciting moment, making him only the third Lions running back since 1960 to throw a touchdown. 

Lions QB Jared Goff also addresses Montgomery’s talents, stating that he knew the two added players, Montgomery and Gibbs, would be beneficial for the Lions when he saw them added to the team’s roster. 

Talking about performance, let’s come to what happened during Sunday’s game between the Lions and the Cleveland Browns. Even though the Lions marked a significant win with a score of 30-10, some players struggled to give their best performance. 

Jared Goff backs Jameson Williams after a quiet week 4 performance

This was their third win with more than 30 points to make it a 3-1 record. But Jameson Williams hasn’t been getting a ton of passes thrown his way early in the 2025 season. Even though he’s a huge talent, Jared Goff has only targeted him 20 times through the first four games.

He did turn those limited chances into 10 catches for 214 yards and a touchdown, proving he’s still a massive, big-play threat. But he has one weakness, which is the lack of targets.

Week 4 was particularly slow for Williams, even in a tough matchup against the Cleveland Browns’ strong defense. He was targeted eight times but only caught two passes for 40 yards and even lost three yards on his only rushing attempt. But that hasn’t made Goff lose faith in his player, as he said.

“We would love to go to (Williams) as much as possible. He’s as good a player as there is in this league, so I don’t think this game was something different,” 

Goff also said he isn’t worried about Williams getting down on himself, calling the young receiver the “Steady Eddie” type, someone who stays calm and focused. Goff wrapped up by saying the Lions will “keep believing” in Williams’ abilities, giving him another chance to improve in week 5.
