Two days ago, the sources confirmed that John Mara‘s Giants are holding a private workout with Shedeur Sanders. And today, the NFL reporter Dianna Russini is confident about what the Giants owner is doing in terms of looking for 3rd overall pick. John Mara’s reporter decision is so shocking that fans might have earlier thought Russell Wilson‘s career was in jeopardy, but it’s actually a different story than Wilson’s.
The Renowned NFL insider Dianna Russini was on Colin Cowherd‘s The Herd with Colin Cowherd on April 16. After talking about Derek Carr, the Saints, and the possibility of Shedeur Sanders, Colin asked the reporter about the Giants’ 3rd overall pick. But before Russini reported John Mara’s decision on drafting a QB, she told Cowherd that the Giants GM, Joe Schoen, lived near her town. And he attends more Colorado events than any other institute.
But what shocking decision did she confirm about John Mara? When asked about private workouts, Russini said, “I think there’s a lot of smoke. The owner is not even going to the private workout. So, that tells you what you need to know.” And if you rewind a bit to Adam Schefter’s update: “ESPN Sources: Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders will hold one last private workout Thursday in Boulder, Colorado for a contingent of officials from the New York Giants. Some final intrigue leading into next week’s NFL Draft in Green Bay.” What does it mean if your franchise holds quarterbacks’ private workouts and the owner is not interested?

This decision only means that the Giants would not be picking up a quarterback as the 3rd overall. Probably hey would go for a defensive tackle or an OT. The owner himself not being interested all but confirms that Shedeur would most probably not be their first-round pick. Dianna Russini also talked about Sanders, saying that Joe Schoen knows who Shedeur Sanders is. Earlier, many draft analysts had his name at the top. But it has slid through the NFL Combine and pro days, for various reasons.
So, if this becomes true, the Giants will only have Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston fighting for the starting quarterback spot. Not to forget, Tommy DeVito is still around. But wait, even if it isn’t Shedeur, Joe Schoen has locked in on a QB draft prospect to give them competition.
John Mara to pick up former Buckeyes QB?
When we are talking about an Ohio State Buckeyes QB, it’s not Jon Gruden’s favorite, Will Howard. But another QB who left the Buckeyes in 2023 and played for the Syracuse Orange. And the Giants update comes as his name starts to outshine projected quarterback picks of the 1st and 2nd rounds.
Marshall Green, an NFL reporter, reported on April 16, 2025, “The New York Giants have expressed interest in Syracuse QB Kyle McCord. Word is that they’re interested in taking him in the 3rd round if he’s still on the board and would consider trading into the 2nd round if there’s a run on QBs.” Yep, it’s Syracuse QB Kyle McCord.

The 22-year-old was inducted into the list of the second-team All-ACC after a dominant season. In the 2024 season, McCord has passed for 4779 yards to score 34 touchdowns while completing 319 out of 592 passes at a 66% CMP rate. He also has less number of sacks in the 2024 season, compared to Shedeur Sanders’ 42 sacks. In the 2023 season, he was sacked only 16 times. Whereas Deion Sanders’s son suffered 52 sacks.

So, comparatively, the McCord looks great with stats. Maybe he is not getting the attention he deserves. But John Mara and the Giants have found him. Obviously, they want a younger and long-term quarterback. Perhaps McCord is the answer.
