Essentials Inside The Story

  • Jason Kelce publicly defended offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo amid heavy criticism after the Eagles’ disappointing season and playoff exit.
  • This came after Kelce's past comments on the Eagles' locker room troubles.
  • Despite Kelce’s support, criticism and calls for Patullo’s firing continue from analysts and fans alike.

The Philadelphia Eagles lost their chance to be in the Super Bowl race, and the coaching staff is being heavily criticized for this. Considering the early elimination and offensive woes during the season, many fans held the hope that the team would move on from offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo. However, the team’s former center, Jason Kelce, firmly pushed back against that idea.

“I know that everybody is out on Kevin Patullo,” Jason Kelce said while speaking with Insider Jeff Skeversky. “I happen to know the guy. I know he’s a great coach. I know it wasn’t the best performance this year offensively. They had the number one highest-paid offense in the league and were mediocre across the board—that’s unacceptable. They had their chances to win that game yesterday, and the players didn’t make the plays. What they’ve done to get here is absolutely a testament to that organization and how well they’re built and how they function across the board.”

The OC faced increased attention this season as performance slipped despite no major changes in the group since last year. While the only significant adjustment came when Patullo was promoted as the OC after Kellen Moore left to become the head coach in New Orleans, all the blame fell on him.

This came as part of a concerning picture, as the team’s scoring dropped from 27.2 points per game last season to 22.3. The rushing attack also fell off, decreasing from 179 yards per game to just under 117.

This came after Jason Kelce’s past comments on the Eagles’ locker room troubles. The former pro felt that the team did not deal with all of the noise, distractions, and issues off the field as they did last year.

“It never felt like they were able to come together this year and realize it’s about us; focus on your job.” Jason Kelce said. “All these narratives out there… I didn’t think they handled it as well this year as they did last season.”

The recent playoff game against the 49ers saw issues that were enough to raise doubts about the locker room’s health. After several endangering drops from the wide receiver AJ Brown, head coach Nick Sirianni appeared to have lost his cool as he rushed towards the sidelines to summon Brown.

This further resulted in a heated exchange, because of which other members of the coaching team had to intervene. The aftermath of this incident also saw Brown avoid talks with the media despite Sirianni’s clarification of the overall incident.

While Jason Kelce’s stance for Kevin Patullo made it clear that he still has some faith in the OC, not everyone is carrying a similar thought process. Several analysts recently stepped forward to demand his firing, citing it as a necessary move for the team now.

ESPN analyst drops blunt remark on Kevin Patullo’s firing

The fans’ voice grew louder as discussions against Kevin Patullo’s authority started to make way on media platforms. However, it wasn’t just the fans but their thoughts were also backed by renowned analysts of the sport.

During ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown, NFL analyst Marcus Spears openly questioned the direction of Philadelphia’s offense and placed the spotlight on offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo after the 23–19 wild-card loss.

“Kevin Patullo’s ass needs to be gone,” Spears said. “This was a horrible year of calling offensive plays. And I don’t think the Philadelphia Eagles offense is as bad as we watched it, based on the talent.”

If Nick Sirianni decides to make a change at offensive coordinator, there are a few names who could be considered. Kliff Kingsbury stands out as a strong option if he does not land a head coaching job for 2026. He has a long history of creative offense and quarterback development.

Another name that stands out is Mike McDaniel, who was recently let go by Miami after multiple playoff trips and could quickly return as a coordinator if he chooses. Nate Scheelhaase could also be a younger option. He is an emerging offensive mind who is already drawing interest around the league. While there’s still no hint towards dropping him off, it still remains to be seen how the franchise responds to critics.
