It’s a total mess at the NY Jets. Even in week 11, they lost by 27-28 to the Colts. That’s disappointing. Aaron Rodgers has announced his plan to play for them in 2025. And views are pouring in from all angles. Most of them are not in his favor. Everyone is talking about the contract money and the dead cap. Here’s everything explained.

It all started in 2023, A-rod signed a 3-year $112.5 million contract with the Jets, with $75 million guaranteed. After missing his first season because of an Achilles injury, he returned as the starter this year. But the results haven’t gone their way either. In 2024, he would earn a $31 million base salary with a cap hit of $17 million and $66 million dead money.

According to Spotrac, he was supposed to earn $36.8 million in cash in 2023, $38.1 million in 2024, and $37.5 million in 2025. In the current 2024 season, he would play for the entire season. The question is mainly about 2025. The news that is coming from the Jets is not good for the seasoned player.

After getting information from the Jets insiders, The Athletic’s Diana Russini claimed that there was no guarantee that Aaron Rodgers would play in the 2025 season. Since then, 2 possibilities have been discussed. It’s all about money.

If the Jets cut the veteran before June 1, the cap hit would be $23.5 million and $49 million dead money. But if they wait and cut him after June 1, it would be only a $14 million cap hit. Nick Wright had also requested the Jets to cut him after June 1 and go ahead with another signal caller.

Amid the calls to remove him before the 2025 season, he has found support in the locker room.

Jets HC has different plans for Aaron Rodgers in 2025

A-rod is struggling with injuries in this season as well. While accepting that the injured ankle, knee, and hamstring have been problematic, he said, “I mean, I’m not playing as well as I would like to play, for sure.” But the head coach Jeff Ulbrich would be delighted to have him back on the team in the 2025 season.

While referring to his injuries, the HC mentioned, “I’d love for him to get an opportunity to play healthy football and see what that looks like for an entire season.” But is that really possible? In 15 days, on December 2, Aaron Rodgers would turn 41. The age factor is extremely critical. There are more chances of him picking newer injuries than getting back to his prime.

There are three choices ahead. Either they can go with Rodgers, go for a rookie in the 2025 Draft, or try to find a quarterback as a replacement. In either of these choices, there are several challenges. While Rodgers is not fully fit, a rookie would need to be trained thoroughly, and finding a replacement to turn around the results would be a daunting task. For now, everyone is waiting to see how they end the 2024 season.

While the Jets struggle with 3-8 after 11 weeks, sitting in the 3rd position in the AFC East, they need to rethink every strategy. Fans can expect some major revamp.
