The New York Giants didn’t exactly make a blockbuster trade when they went looking for another quarterback. Yet, what looked like a desperate midseason move turned into a surprisingly financial gain for Big Blue.

After Jaxson Dart was ruled out for the remainder of the season, the Giants quickly acquired J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings. New York traded a 2027 fifth-round pick for the former No. 10 overall selection, adding another young quarterback to a room that is now led by Jameis Winston.

According to The Athletic, the number that makes this trade especially intriguing is just $836,108, McCarthy’s base salary for the remainder of the 2026 season. The Giants traded for J.J. McCarthy by sending a 2027 fifth-round draft pick for the former first-round QB.

However, there is a realistic possibility that New York may or may not recover that draft pick next offseason, given how McCarthy performs.

Obviously, the scenario depends on what happens over the remainder of the season. McCarthy still has to prove that he can play in the actual form that made him a top-10 selection only two years ago. If he struggles, the Giants can trade him next offseason and recover a fifth-round selection.

In other words, the Giants may not be paying a fifth-round pick and salary for McCarthy. They could be paying the price of one season for a modest base salary while retaining the chances of recovering the draft capital.

McCarthy was selected 10th overall by the Minnesota Vikings in 2024 and remains on his rookie contract. McCarthy missed playing time in his entire rookie season due to a season-ending Knee Meniscus Tear. After surgery and rehab, he was back on the field in 2025, but missed 5 games after sustaining a high ankle sprain in the third quarter of a Week 2 loss against the Atlanta Falcons.

The quarterback then entered the concussion protocol after some symptoms following a Week 12 game against the Green Bay Packers, and missed playing one more game. McCarthy’s 2o25 season ended in Week 16 after he sustained a hairline fracture in his throwing hand.

Earlier in this offseason, the Vikings signed Kyler Murray and announced him as their starting QB during training camp. After McCarthy lost the starting job to Murray, the Giants acquired him on his existing rookie deal, rather than having to negotiate a new contract with the QB.

McCarthy’s four-year rookie contract is valued at $21.85 million, with the majority of that money already tied to his time with the Minnesota Vikings. OverTheCap lists his 2026 Giants base salary at $1.075 million, while the $836,108 figure cited in the trade analysis represents the remaining base salary of this season.

The Giants are not taking on the financial burden normally linked with acquiring a former top-10 QB. Instead, they get a young player still on his rookie deal, with the immediate remaining salary, which is a considerably smaller number

John Harbaugh acknowledged that McCarthy still has plenty to learn in the Giants’ offense, while offensive coordinator Matt Nagy explained that even basic things such as cadence, personnel grouping, formations, and motions must be learned.

McCarthy himself has also embraced the unexpected change, calling the trade an opportunity to take advantage of. For the Giants, that opportunity can extend beyond simply surviving Dart’s absence.

If McCarthy settles into the offense, protects his trade value, and gives New York another valuable QB option, he can stay in the Giants’ arsenal next year. And if that happens, New York may have to figure out how much they can spend to keep him in the Big Blue.
