After ending the 2025 season with a disappointing 5-12 record, the New York Giants have kick-started their rebuild by signing John Harbaugh as their new head coach. Since leaving the Baltimore Ravens after a successful 18 seasons, Harbaugh became one of the most sought-after coaches on the market. Hence, the Giants decided to employ the help of their former Super Bowl-winning head coach, Tom Coughlin, who narrated his role in bringing his friend, John Harbaugh.

“So I called him, and initially, it was just tertiary stuff,” Coughlin said during an appearance on the Giants Huddle podcast. “It was the New York Giant franchise, the Mara and Tisch families, and how they interacted in their ownership role of the New York Giants. And then, you know, just a little bit of conversation here and there about that. But basically, what happened was just as if any friend or anyone would call me and ask me about the New York Giants. That’s where the conversations all began.”

New York Giants executive Chris Mara also confirmed Tom Coughlin’s involvement, as he asked the former franchise head coach to set up an initial contact with John Harbaugh before he traveled to Baltimore for an in-person interaction.

“We discussed it as a group, as an ownership, and as an organization, and I decided that it was time to act on it,” Mara said, as per the Giants website. “On Friday night before the playoff games started, I talked to John (Mara) and Steve (Tisch) and said, ‘I’m driving to Baltimore tomorrow, and I’m going to talk to John.’ Tom Coughlin set it up for me in terms of contact info. I had never talked to John Harbaugh in my life until I got to his house.

As these efforts resulted in fruition, the Giants swiftly completed signing John Harbaugh, who comes to the Big Apple after a 180-113 record, the fourth-best record in the NFL in that span, alongside 13 playoff wins. Looking at his trophies, Harbaugh won six AFC North titles and Super Bowl XLVII.

Alongside these accolades, the NFL veteran could be the perfect coach for developing the young core led by Jaxson Dart. Especially after his excitement when asked about his plans for the Giants’ young QB1.

Despite a disappointing 2025 season, there is optimism and hope in the New York Giants organization thanks to their star quarterback, Jaxson Dart, who is a big part of the team’s future. He exceeded expectations as a rookie, throwing for 2,272 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 14 starts.

Dart’s development will be a key facet of Harbaugh’s job, and the veteran coach is ready for this challenge.

“I’m excited about Jaxson Dart,” he said when asked about working with the youngster. “… You build your team around your quarterback. I like the way he plays. I like his talent, but more than that, I like who he is and what he’s about.”

Now, after securing a long-term head coach like John Harbaugh, the Giants’ fan base would hope the former Ravens head coach could get the franchise back on a winning track and soon end their 14-year Super Bowl drought.
