Former NFL quarterback and FOX Sports analyst Mark Sanchez has pleaded guilty in connection with an October 2025 case in which he got into an altercation with a 69-year-old truck driver on his job and was stabbed in the process.

“The state and Sanchez’s legal team filed a joint motion in Marion County Superior Court 21 on Thursday,” Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk reported on September 3. “They requested the judge vacate the upcoming Sept. 8 jury trial and ‘set this matter for a guilty plea and sentencing hearing.'”

The incident reportedly took place in Indianapolis on October 5, 2025, around 12:30 a.m., when Sanchez was in town to call a game between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium later that day. He was staying at a hotel nearby.

According to court files, Sanchez got into an altercation with Perry Tole, the truck driver, who was at the time at a hotel loading dock collecting used cooking oil, which was part of his job.

As per the police affidavit obtained by USA TODAY Sports, Sanchez and Tole got into an argument over parking. Tole said Sanchez entered his truck without permission, and told police that he thought he was in physical danger, which prompted him to grab his pepper spray from his pocket and spray it on Sanchez.

As per the affidavit, even after Tole used the pepper spray, Sanchez was again coming near Tole, which made Tole believe that Sanchez was a threat to his life, and he stabbed Sanchez in self-defense.

After the stabbing, Sanchez reportedly had a “look of shock” and fled the scene. The former NFL quarterback was later arrested at the hospital where he was being treated and said that he didn’t remember where he was or the person who stabbed him.

Meanwhile, Tole, who also sustained a laceration on his face and was hospitalized as well, filed a lawsuit against him and FOX, prompting FOX to part ways with Sanchez in November.

The motion to plead guilty by Sanchez, the No. 5 overall pick of the New York Jets in 2009, has been filed after a trial was continued five times. The sentencing hearing will either be held on November 9 or November 16. The judge must still accept the guilty plea before the case can move forward.

Sanchez faces a felony battery resulting in serious bodily injury and three more misdemeanors: charges of battery resulting in bodily injury, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, and public intoxication endangering the life of another. It is still unclear which charges Sanchez is pleading guilty to.

Perry Tole’s Attorney Issues Statement Over Mark Sanchez’s Plea

After the incident last October, Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears released a statement and shared the affidavit detailing the case, saying the “incident should have never happened” when the argument turned into a physical altercation. The prosecutor also said to “follow the facts and the law wherever they lead” during the investigation.

Now, it seems like both parties are cooperating to close the case, with Nick Sanchez Jr., Mark Sanchez’s brother and legal adviser, saying that the legal team is “finalizing an agreement with the prosecutor’s office.”

This is a positive development,” Nick Sanchez Jr. said Sept. 3 in a statement to USA TODAY Sports. “We are finalizing an agreement with the prosecutor’s office that provides a path toward resolving the state’s case. We’re also encouraged by the constructive conversations taking place regarding the related civil matter. There is real momentum toward bringing this entire chapter to a close.”

Encouraged by the cooperation from Sanchez’s camp, Tole’s attorney also shared a positive statement regarding the development.

“We are pleased with the constructive and professional conversations we’ve had with Mr. Sanchez’s team,” attorney Matt Golitko of Tole said in a statement. “Our discussions have been productive, and we’re on a positive path toward an agreement that will allow the parties to move forward. Mr. Tole appreciates the progress we have achieved and looks forward to an amicable resolution.”

With both sides seemingly working in harmony to reach an agreement, Mark Sanchez’s near-year-long legal battle could soon come to an end.
