San Francisco has decided on who will be at the helm of its defense for the 2024 season. The 49ers are poised to bring on board Nick Sorensen as their new defensive coordinator, as reported by NFL Network Insider, Ian Rapoport, on Saturday, citing sources familiar with the matter. Sorensen will be taking over from Steve Wilks, who was let go by the 49ers following their defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.

But Sorensen was not the 49ers’ first pick. In fact, after the blow delivered by Steve Spagnuolo’s defense during the Super Bowl, they tried to poach him from the Chiefs. But that ended up in a second blow to the Niners.

Steve Spagnuolo earns 5 million boost

The Chiefs’ DC, who has held the position for the past five years, recently signed a new contract. According to ESPN reports, the Niners expressed interest in luring him away for their defensive play-calling role. Despite coaching on an expiring contract last season, Patrick Mahomes and Co. managed to retain him by offering an additional $5 million to stay with the team.

San Francisco adopted a dual strategy for his replacement. They elevated Nick Sorensen to the position of DC and also welcomed Brandon Staley to their coaching staff. At 45 years old, Sorensen has been a part of the 49ers since 2022. Interestingly, he served as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ special teams coordinator under Urban Meyer three years ago. Additionally, Sorensen has experience working with Robert Saleh on Pete Carroll’s coaching staff, where he juggled responsibilities between special teams and defensive roles.
