Essentials Inside The Story
- Vrabel missed the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft to attend counseling
- Following the release of the photos, an internal investigation was launched by The Athletic into Russini's work
- The NFL reporter was fired from her role at USA Today after publicly celebrating Russini’s resignation on X
It may not be too far-fetched to say that when New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and former NFL insider Dianna Russini were reportedly photographed together at a resort in Arizona, it blew up the internet. Everyone had different opinions about the situation, but ultimately it led to one question: what exactly was happening behind the scenes?

And just when things seemed to be approaching the quieter side of the story, the NFL world came across another revelation. But it was not from the two personalities involved. Rather, it was from the one who dived too deep into the matter and was fired from her job.
“I lost my job – in part – for attempting to blow the lid off the NFL’s open secret: that some female sports reporters, rumored to include some of the most prominent names in the business, trade s for stories,” wrote Crissy Froyd for the Daily Mail.
Froyd did not mince her words when speaking about the incident. She alleged that an eyewitness informed the New York Post that the two were allegedly “all over each other” at the luxury resort in Sedona, Arizona.
“I don’t care what consenting adults do in their private lives,” she added. “I do care, however, if the industry that I have dedicated my working life to since I was 15 years old and continue working within, has been tainted by corruption.”
So, when Vrabel finally appeared in front of the media for the first time since April 23, she expected someone to bring up the incident. Since the allegation, an investigation was launched against Russini’s work, but before it could conclude, she resigned from The Athletic. Whereas Vrabel chose not to appear in front of the media during the pre-draft press conference.
He was also absent on the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft and later revealed that he instead chose to go to counseling while taking accountability for his actions.
“I take accountability for my actions… This is not an easy thing for me to admit, but it is one that I know will make me a better person,” he said.
According to Crissy, the journalists may have been afraid of drawing more controversy, or they feared losing their jobs, or they would “have been fearful that the team and league, which controls which reporters are allowed into news conferences, would find a reason to never again grant me (them) access. That could be the end of a career.”
Crissy Froyd is clearly upset over the Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel controversy
Crissy Froyd, in her latest blog, mentioned that the journalists were too busy asking Mike Vrabel questions about his football and family. They asked him how the OTAs were going and the players’ morale, and Crissy was clearly disheartened that none of them wanted to get to the bottom of the story when the HC appeared in the New England Patriots news conference room.
Froyd was clearly frustrated and added that it was not the first time something like this had happened. Since the pictures of the two hanging at the Arizona resort came out, more pictures have come out, alleging that there may be more to the story. One was from a private Nashville boat trip in 2021, and another from an outing at a Mississippi casino in 2024. Crissy Froyd is now openly alleging that some female reporters might as well be open to some relationships in exchange for exclusive news.
“At the very least, Russini and Vrabel’s relationship creates the perception of a quid pro quo culture that pressures female journalists to trade s—ual relationships with powerful male NFL employees in return for access and advancement,” wrote Froyd.
Whether Crissy’s allegations prove to be true or not remains a separate conversation, but it’s important to note that she was terminated from her job before she could make further allegations against Mike Vrabel, Dianna Russini, and the league.
“The Vrabel-Russini scandal also casts suspicion over the journalists and NFL teams that do things that right way, of which there are many. That’s unfair and demoralizing – and that’s why I tweeted about Russini’s resignation from The Athletic, resulting in my termination from USA Today,” Froyd concluded.
