Nick Sirianni’s Philadelphia Eagles are having a great season! With a strong 8-2 record and only seven games left, they’re in an excellent position to clinch the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. This would give them the best chance to make it back to, and potentially win, the Super Bowl again. Despite their success, not everything is smooth sailing.

Over the weekend, reporter Dianna Russini posted a report that multiple offensive players on the Eagles are becoming frustrated with Jalen Hurts‘ approach this season. Coach Sirianni directly addressed this reported widespread frustration among players and staff. When asked about it, Sirianni addressed his frustration, stating:

“I’m not frustrated with him.”

Nick Sirianni’s defense appears rooted in a combination of Hurts’ proven track record, the Eagles’ overall winning formula, and a deliberate team philosophy prioritizing ball security over explosive plays. In support of this priority, Sirianni repeatedly highlights Hurts’ daily preparation and mental toughness as foundational to the team’s culture.

Since the start of the 2022 season, Jalen Hurts has had one of the highest QB winning percentages in the NFL with a .796 win percentage, demonstrating that his leadership translates directly to victory. While the frustration report centers on Hurts’ alleged hesitancy to throw into “tight windows,” Sirianni’s focus is clearly on the positive results of this conservative approach, as he said,

“He’s just done such a good job of running the offense—all the things that require him to play quarterback to help put us in positions to win each and every game. And each game looks like I said, but each game looks a little bit different, and I think we’ve shown that we can win multiple different ways.”

The Eagles have one of the fewest turnovers in the league. Hurts has been hyper-secure with the ball, which directly wins games and prevents opponents from getting easy scoring opportunities.

The Eagles are also the best red zone team in the NFL. Hurts’ ability to be safe, decisive, and utilize his rushing ability when the field shrinks ensures the Eagles convert possessions into touchdowns rather than field goals, which is a hallmark of an efficient, winning offense for the team, one of the best in the NFL.

Why some Eagles players are upset with Jalen Hurts despite Nick Sirianni’s public support

Irrespective of the wins, the locker room situation in the Eagles isn’t an ideal one. There’s talk that some Eagles offensive players are getting really frustrated with quarterback Jalen Hurts and how he’s playing this year.

This frustration has led to a really uncomfortable comparison. Insider Derrick Gunn reported a comparison on The Seth Joyner Show, as he said,

“There are a lot of people in that (Eagles) organization that are frustrated with the QB situation. This is almost Carson Wentz part 2.”

That comparison is a big deal because Carson Wentz’s time in Philly ended badly, with him being criticized for his poor decisions. Now, Hurts is facing that same scrutiny, not just from fans, but from his own teammates.

It’s confusing because, on one hand, Hurts is actually being very careful with the ball. He leads the entire NFL with a super low interception rate of 0.4%. He’s also throwing for more yards per game this year (199.5 yards) than he did last year. It’s undeniable that his efficiency has actually dropped, as last year he averaged 8.0 yards every time he attempted a pass, and this year the number has reduced to 7.4 yards.

The main issue is that the Eagles’ offense, which was explosive last year, looks stuck this season. Reportedly, the offensive players feel that Hurts is being too hesitant. They think his slow decision-making is costing them scoring drives and killing their momentum on the field, forcing him to be more aggressive when they’re already behind the curve.
