Eagles quarterback Tanner McKee had to sit out practice on Tuesday. He hurt his finger on his throwing hand. In his absence, Kyle McCord and Dorian Thompson-Robinson took reps behind Jalen Hurts. The backup quarterback also had to miss the second preseason game, perhaps because of that finger injury. He hasn’t practiced since. With the Eagles set to face the Cowboys in the regular season, will McKee be ready?

That seems a tough one to answer for the coach, Nick Sirianni. As Jeff McLane reported, the head coach didn’t give a clear answer when asked if McKee will be available for the opener. While it’s not serious enough to require surgery, he’s been keeping that hand tucked away in his pocket in public, which suggests the issue hasn’t gone away.  “Eagles HC Nick Sirianni was non-committal about his availability. McKee injured a finger on his throwing right hand recently. It’s a non-surgical injury, but McKee has had his hand in his pocket in public settings,” McLane reported.

He’s working to get back. We’ll see where he is,” Sirianni told the reporters. McKee seemingly held the QB2 position after Hurtz. He was confident, racking up 20 of 25 passing for 252 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason opener for the Eagles. This explains McKee’s role in the team.

He is impressive, but the coach’s hesitation around McKee’s status makes things troublesome. If the backup QB were to miss the season opener, the question is whether the coach is confident in the rest of the players. Now, McCord was the only quarterback to play against the Jets. If this is any indication, he might already have the lead in the QB3 race over Thompson-Robinson. He capped off the game 15-of-35 passing for 136 yards and an interception.

When asked if McCord would serve as Hurts’ primary backup if Tanner McKee isn’t ready for the season opener, the coach praised Kyle and added that he feels confident about the entire roster. “Kyle has done some good things. And I thought he did some good things, played situational football today. I feel good about the roster as a whole and where we are right now, at all positions,” he said. This isn’t the only one. The Eagles also got hit with another big injury as a wide receiver who went down with an injury that he sustained at the training camp.

Johnny Wilson sustained a season-ending injury

After the injury, the 24-year-old was carted off the field on Tuesday this week. As per the report by Jeff McLane, Johnny Wilson will undergo season-ending surgery on his knee and ankle. That rules him out for the entire 2025 campaign. This is a blow to both the player’s development and the Eagles’ depth at wide receiver. He is placed in IR.

As a rookie, he saw action in 16 games but had limited production, catching just five passes for 38 yards. His lone touchdown came in Week 10 against the Dallas Cowboys. Even so, there was hope he’d carve out a bigger role this year as he continued to adjust to the pro level.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Nick Sirianni's silence on McKee's injury a sign of deeper issues for the Eagles?

Have an interesting take?

For Wilson, the injury stalls a promising career that was just getting started. He’ll now spend his second NFL season rehabbing while the Eagles must address the issue quickly. And the Eagles’ front office did.

Earlier this week, the Eagles traded a 2026 fifth-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2026 sixth-rounder and wideout John Metchie. He has played 29 games under his belt and has 415 career receiving yards. This will be Metchie’s fourth year, but he might be able to provide the depth to an Eagles group that it suddenly needs.
