Big news for Dallas Cowboys fans. Dallas has been rebuilding its pass rush piece by piece all offseason, and this might be the move that ties it together. Hometown hero Von Miller is coming home, he announced the news on Instagram.

“Hereee Weee Gooo” 🤠 @dallascowboys LFG!!! 😵💫😈🏆 @greenerpastureschicken “DeSoto Tx 75115”,” Miller posted on Instagram.
He also shared a photo of himself in a No. 40 Cowboys jersey, just to really drive the point home.
It makes sense when you think about it. Miller grew up in DeSoto, only 24 miles from AT&T Stadium, and became a star at Texas A&M before going pro. Of late, he’d expressed that he would love to play for the Cowboys; he’d even shared a doctored image of himself in Cowboys gear to make his case.
Miller was also spotted working out near the Cowboys’ facility in Frisco, so the signs were all there. The two sides skipped the week’s wait for the Cowboys to wrap up training camp in California before reportedly agreeing on a one-year deal.
Over 15 seasons with the Broncos, Rams, Bills and Commanders, Miller racked up 138.5 sacks. He recorded nine last season, at age 36, while playing 37 percent of the defensive snaps. The reigning active sack leader coming to Dallas bolsters this defense to a level that wasn’t expected yet. Miller recorded nine sacks last season with the Washington Commanders.
The Denver Broncos drafted Miller second overall in 2011, who went on to earn Super Bowl MVP honors when the Broncos knocked off Seattle for the 2015 title. He picked up a second ring a few years later with the 2021 Rams. His resume also includes eight Pro Bowl selections, earning the nod every year from 2011 through 2019 except for 2013.
There is, of course, a cause for concern. Miller is 37 years old, and he hasn’t been able to play at a high clip since getting injured in 2020. He sat out the entire year, before which he tallied a single-digit sack total only twice in his career. After 2020, the highest he’d gone was eight with the Buffalo Bills, before notching 9 last year.
For his age, perhaps that number is understandable. Miller himself regards getting “8-10 sacks” as a very realistic goal “walking in” to the team.
But for what it’s worth, Miller always wanted to play this year.
“I think I proved to myself that I can play another year,” he said earlier this year, per The Athletic. “… I’m not in a position to start making demands and saying where I want to play and where I want to be at. Whoever wants me, that’s where I’ll be.”
Miller was not subtle about his desire to play for the Cowboys. He’d said in an interview with RJ Ochoa that there was a “special place in my heart for the Dallas Cowboys.” He had also attended the training camp in early August.
The Dallas Cowboys sorely missed a good pass rush last season in the absence of Micah Parsons, who was traded. The Cowboys are planning to lead the charge with Rashan Gary and Donovan Ezieraku. But with a healthy Von Miller, there can be a change in the order.
How does Von Miller fit into the Dallas defense?
It will be bold to assume Miller is given a starting role for a long time. With Gary and Ezieraku expected to be starters, the Cowboys can also rely on Malachi Lawrence, Sam Miller, and James Houston. Miller will most likely be used on a situational basis too, like Washington did last year. The Sporting News’ Drew Bishop wrote that the best situation for him would be 3rd-and-6 and longer plays, where quarterbacks need to pass.
Miller is also familiar with defensive coordinator Christian Parker, having worked with him during their time in Denver
