It looks like Jerry Jones has learned his lesson the hard way, even if it came at the cost of a failed season. One year ago, the Cowboys traded Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers for what Jones claimed would lead to playoff success. The reality was a little different. Dak Prescott led a lopsided team. Jones understood defense was important. 

That’s why the Dallas Cowboys had been in the chase for Maxx Crosby earlier this season, before the Ravens swooped him up with a better deal. When the trade fell through, Jones was quick to make his position clear: the Dallas Cowboys had never backed down. And after leaving fans waiting for an update for over a month, Jones might finally have an answer for the team. But could it be a move that the franchise suffers from? 

That’s because the Cowboys have made some cap space ahead of the 2026 season. By restructuring three key veteran contracts, Dallas freed up over $19 million in cap room, pushing their total available space past the $30 million threshold. 

According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the front office reworked deals for defensive tackle Kenny Clark, cornerback DaRon Bland, and tight end Jake Ferguson. Prior to the adjustments, NFLPA records showed Dallas sitting on roughly $14.2 million. By converting base salaries into signing bonuses—spreading cap hits into future seasons—Dallas now holds the flexibility to absorb a premier veteran contract before the season kicks off.

ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio immediately connected the financial dots. Crosby carries a $30 million base salary for 2026, aligning almost dollar-for-dollar with the Cowboys’ newly created space.

“With more than $30 million in 2026 cap space now on hand, the Cowboys have plenty of space to absorb a veteran contract (or two) via trade,” Florio wrote. “Coincidentally, or not, Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby has a 2026 base salary of $30 million. Just saying.” 

Crosby previously signed a massive three-year contract extension with the Raiders in March 2025 valued at $106.5 million. He carries a massive cap charge of $35.79 million, which consumes roughly 12 percent of the NFL’s $301.2 million maximum cap limit. His dead cap value also currently amounts to slightly more than $64 million. 

Now, the team has the means to go for Crosby. And while the Raiders rejected all three of their offers the last time, Crosby’s injury concerns could put Dallas in a favorable negotiation spot. Jones could cough up the 2027 picks once again. 

However, there’s a different concern. Crosby has been an incredible performer for the Raiders. There’s a reason why franchises sought his trade. But his injury adds a tough condition to the entire trade. Crosby suffered a torn meniscus back in October 2025. That put him out of contention for the remainder of the season. 

It was enough to derail the Raiders’ season, and then Crosby’s move to the Raiders. But even then, Jones had been insistent about possibly bringing him, as was evident from his comments in July.

“We did not walk away. That’s about all there is to say. We understood his injury well. We thought he could help us then. We were surprised by the way that was resolved.”

On paper, Crosby’s addition doesn’t hurt the squad. In a defense made up of veterans like Von Miller and Rashan Gary mixed with young stars, it could be the addition that fuels another Super Bowl run. At the same time, it takes away from first-round picks. Dallas needs them for sustained success. 

And that’s where the Cowboys may have drawn a line. While Jones did believe they could bring him on, the training camp and preseason games gave plenty to celebrate about the defense. The reason we say that comes on the back of Todd Archer’s second update.

When he was asked about the $30 million coincidence, he poured cold water all over hopes that Crosby would come to Dallas with a simple, “To answer the next question: no.” 

If that is the case, the Dallas Cowboys may have made one of their smarter choices of the season.
