The Dallas Cowboys lost their seventh game of the season against the Minnesota Vikings. With the playoff hopes already over, this 34-26 defeat left the owner and general manager, Jerry Jones, disappointed as he took shots at the defensive coordinator, Matt Eberflus.

“The adjustments that we should be making should be with this year, these next three games in mind. They should not be being made, and with three games left in the short time, we’ve got to play ’em in, then that will impact any adjustments that you make regarding coaching, the timeframe we’re dealing with. That’s a legit question,” Jones said while talking to the reporters.
Safe to say, DC Eberflus is in real danger here. The Cowboys went into the bye week with a 3-5 record but won three consecutive games after coming back. However, the last two losses have put significant pressure on the Jones-led front office. Additionally, their rivals’ scores in the seven losses this season paint a bigger picture.

In five of their losses, the opponents have scored 30 or more points. On the other hand, their opponents have scored more than 30 points only once in the Cowboys’ six wins. So, one can say that Matt Eberflus hasn’t used the coverages well enough. Even if you look at the numbers season-wise, there’s a noticeable trend.
| Season | Points per game by Cowboys | Points per game by Rivals | Playoff Spot Secured |
| 2025 (Until Week 15) | 29.1 | 30.0 | TBD |
| 2024 | 20.6 | 27.5 | N |
| 2023 | 29.9 | 18.5 | Y |
| 2022 | 27.5 | 20.1 | Y |
| 2021 | 31.2 | 21.1 | Y |
| 2020 | 24.7 | 29.4 | N |
| 2019 | 27.1 | 20.1 | N |

In the seasons they have qualified for the playoffs, the Cowboys have scored more points, holding their rivals to fewer points. The lone exception is 2019, when they failed to secure a playoff spot after losing the second-last game to the Philadelphia Eagles.
On the other hand, Eberflus hasn’t managed injuries well. The DC knew that the defense was already depleted after Micah Parsons left for the Green Bay Packers. He couldn’t help Trevon Diggs recover fast, and the CB is now taking shots at the defensive coordinator.

Before the Week 15 game, Diggs announced that he was ready to play. However, head coach Brian Schottenheimer and Eberflus decided to rest him. Frustrated by the decision, Diggs has now revealed his stance on Eberflus’ role.
“It could be the change of defensive coordinators, you know, that’s hard. It’s hard to deal with just changing personnel, finding what fits, finding what fits your players that you have. It’s just trying to find a balance that you could run with,” Diggs said.

While there is some serious criticism of Eberflus, in October this year, Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones expressed confidence in the defensive coordinator and claimed that they were looking for another year with him in charge of their defense. However, if the Cowboys do not qualify for the playoffs, which is highly possible, the Dallas front office may potentially make some moves in the coaching unit.
Only time will tell how long Eberflus will stay in Dallas.
