If you’ve ever stepped on the gridiron, the itch to compete never truly leaves you; all you need is an opportunity. Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer gave exactly that to former FBI agent Rick Burkhead to wrap up minicamp. Satisfied with his team’s work over the first two days, Schottenheimer offered a high-stakes reward: he would cancel the final day of practice if Burkhead could sink a free throw. Burkhead, the NFL’s local security rep, was just there for meetings. But as a former Eastern Kentucky University player, he was ready for the spotlight.

“Rick Burkhead, a lead security representative for the NFL in North Texas taking part in the meetings, hit a free throw today in one of the meetings to officially cancel today’s walkthrough,” Fortworth Star-Telegram’s Nick Harris wrote on X. “The former FBI agent father of Rex Burkhead got a lot of cheers on his way out.”
“I honestly didn’t think that Rick Burkhead would make the shot,” Schottenheimer said at the press conference on June 18.
Burkhead’s football career ended after college, as no NFL team drafted or signed him. Because of that, Rick shifted his focus entirely to public service and law enforcement. He joined the FBI and served as a Supervisory Special Agent for 24 years before retiring from the bureau in 2019. However, his love for sports brought him full circle.
Rick founded a security firm and became the NFL’s Lead Security Representative for the North Texas region, keeping him connected to the league. The best part? He passed his athletic genes on to his son, Rex Burkhead. Rex played running back in the league and was with the Cincinnati Bengals, the New England Patriots, and the Houston Texans. His father used to coach him when he was a child, and he was managing his FBI career even when Rex was playing in the NFL.

That understanding of the modern NFL grind is exactly why Burkhead’s big shot mattered so much to a team looking for rest. Moreover, the canceled Thursday session was only intended to be an energetic walkthrough and mock game rather than a heavy practice. Since no pads were to be worn and no significant contact was expected, the session could have been skipped by the coaching staff. And, America’s Team wasn’t the only team that chose to send players off early.
The Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have also called off their last practice sessions on the minicamp schedule. The Los Angeles Rams skipped minicamp entirely. Everyone wants to be better rested by the time the training camp comes around.
Schottenheimer, however, was “happy” with how these past few weeks have transpired for the Cowboys.
“I think we got a lot of really good things done,” he said. “I’ve done more seven-on-seven than I ever want to do again in my life in my life, but it’s kind of what we need to do.”
The Cowboys should have that spirit, because boy, do they need it. Schottenheimer cannot afford a result like last year, with the defense tanking the whole campaign. The top brass have orchestrated an overhaul and are building something exciting with new defensive coordinator Christian Parker and the other additions. When the team rejoins in training camp, they’ll appreciate mincamp ending early.
Fortunately, the Boys will now have approximately five and a half weeks off until making the trip to Oxnard, California, for the start of training camp at River Ridge Playing Fields, which have hosted the team’s training camp since 2001 and will continue until at least 2030. Per Schottenheimer, padded practices will see an uptick. The coaching staff will differentiate the weekly routines into light, medium, and heavy workloads.
And there will be joint practices with the Los Angeles Rams and the New Orleans Saints. Following the training camp, the NFL world gets to see the new-look Dallas Cowboys for the first time in the preseason games. They’ll first face off against the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field in Week 1 (August 15, 2026). Next, they’ll take on the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium on August 22. And in Week 3, the Cowboys will compete against the New Orleans Saints at home. That will help them build up the mass for the regular season game against the New York Giants on September 13.
