Jerry Jones’ Dallas Cowboys hit the jackpot when they traded for George Pickens earlier this year. The 24-year-old wide receiver has gone above and beyond the Dallas’ expectations in the first six starts. Pickens’ chemistry with QB Dak Prescott has taken the Cowboys’ passing game to a level above. What started as a move to give CeeDee Lamb some help has turned into one of Jerry Jones’ best decisions in recent memory. But even Pickens has his flaws, and head coach Brian Schottenheimer is already aware.

The Cowboys’ receiver has been putting up astronomical numbers in the league so far, but HC Schottenheimer believes that there are still a few things that the wide receiver can improve upon.

“I mean, just his playmaking ability is special. We do have to work on two things,” Schottenheimer said. “Him not trying to leap over the entire team. He likes to jump, and that’s kind of where I was like, ‘No, George, don’t do that.’ And then his ball security is a little bit loose. So we’re working on those two things.”

Well, despite ranking first in receiving TDs(6) and third in receiving yards (525) in the league, Pickens has his share of flaws. And we’ve seen a few instances where he’s proven Schottenheimer right.

Look back at the Colts game. Pickens broke a tackle after catching a short pass, but he held the ball too far away from his body. A Colts defender punched it loose at the 3-yard line, killing a touchdown drive. Later in the same game, he extended an arm for extra yardage when nowhere near the first-down marker, again risking a fumble.

Or that game against the Bears, when a routine pass bounced off his hands and right into a defender’s arms for an interception in the fourth quarter. Whatever momentum the Cowboys were trying to build was wiped off.

But as the Dallas head coach remarked, it’s George Pickens we’re talking about. And it would be unfair to give him his due credit. The fans expected the season to go down the drain after CeeDee Lamb’s injury, but he has held the fort just fine. And his performances have made an extension very much possible.

George Pickens clears feelings about a possible extension

CeeDee Lamb has been out since he injured his ankle vs the Chicago Bears, but Pickens has gone well and beyond anyone’s expectations amidst his absence. Dallas suffered yet another loss vs the Panthers, but Pickens was again a bright spot, racking up nine catches for 168 yards and a touchdown in that game.

The performance obviously brought up questions about his possible extension. And when asked if he’d like to extend his stay in Dallas, the wide receiver seemed rather excited. “I wouldn’t mind it,” Pickens said. “The guys in the locker room are super cool, the energy’s great, but like I said, I always want to showcase my talents.”

Even his fellow WR seems excited about playing alongside him for a little longer. “I don’t think everybody really believed me until one of us went down and you saw,” Lamb said, referring to an earlier comment he made about both of them being No. 1 WRs. “He’s a dominant receiver.”

It’s almost as if everyone in the Dallas building wants him to stay. Quarterback Dak Prescott said that he’s going to have a sit-down with Jerry Jones to talk about the importance of having Pickens on the team. And Jones didn’t seem against the idea either. “He is doing more than we did expect, or that we could have expected,” Jones said.

Well, the season is still young, and a lot can happen in the next 2-3 months. But do you see the Cowboys extending Pickens on a long-term contract?
