Tension gripped Lambeau Field on Thursday night as Washington Commanders defensive end Deatrich Wise suffered a second-quarter injury. The game came to a halt, and the crowd fell silent. Players from both teams knelt in support as Wise was carted off with an apparent left quadriceps injury.

The leg issue emerged during an extra point attempt when Packers tackle Anthony Belton accidentally fell backward onto Wise’s right leg. The latter had already made a tackle earlier in the game. At that point, Washington was trailing 14-0, having allowed a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Love to Romeo Doubs and a 2-yard rushing score by Josh Jacobs. What followed was deeply unsettling.

Concern spread quickly as players from both teams showed visible worry. The stadium grew quiet as the cart arrived, and Wise was taken off the field. His absence left a significant gap in the Commanders’ defensive line.
Green Bay quickly capitalized on Wise’s exit. Already leading 14-0, the Packers extended their advantage with a balanced attack led by Jordan Love and Josh Jacobs. Tight end Tucker Kraft broke loose for over 100 receiving yards and a touchdown, keeping Washington’s defense on its heels.

The Commanders rallied late in the fourth quarter behind quarterback Jayden Daniels, who connected with Zach Ertz and Deebo Samuel for touchdowns. A successful two-point conversion narrowed the score, but it wasn’t enough. Green Bay held on for a 27-18 win.
The loss dropped Washington to 1–1 on the season and extended their winless streak at Lambeau Field, where they haven’t won since 1986.
Wise’s exit raises big concerns for Washington’s defense
Losing Deatrich Wise during the game proved costly for the Commanders, especially given the veteran experience he brings. He signed a one-year, $5 million deal with Washington in March 2025, expected to be a key piece in rebuilding a defensive front that ranked 28th last season.
The 31-year-old did exactly what he was signed to do. He made a strong debut for Washington in Week 1 against the Giants, recording three tackles, including one for loss, and a quarterback hit, helping limit the opponents to just 74 rushing yards. His performance highlighted his importance to the Commanders’ defensive front.

With Wise now sidelined due to a quadriceps injury, the team will rely more heavily on defensive ends Javontae Jean-Baptiste, Jacob Martin, and Von Miller to fill the gap. The full extent of Wise’s injury is still unknown and will depend on results from further medical evaluation.
Adding to the concern, his injury was especially troubling given his pre-game status. He was listed as questionable due to a knee issue from the previous week. Though he practiced Monday and Tuesday, his workload was limited on Wednesday. Playing against a strong Packers lineup was already risky, making his presence on the field a calculated gamble.
