“Bring my boys home.” That was Stephanie Diggs’ heartfelt plea to Commanders minority owner Magic Johnson back in May. She wanted her boys Stefon and Trevon Diggs to return to the DMV. Now, after two months, half of that wish has come true. Stefon Diggs, the veteran wide receiver, is officially with the Washington Commanders

“Former Patriots WR Stefon Diggs is set to sign with the Commanders,” NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported on X. “With an offseason at full health, Diggs is ready to hit the ground running as a key weapon for Jayden Daniels in Year 3. The QB-friendly WR should help.”

Per the latest reports, Diggs has signed a one-year deal that can balloon up to $12 million. The team was in desperate need of more offensive firepower opposite Terry McLaurin, and now they get a WR who just played in Super Bowl LX five months ago.

Just hours after the reports came about, Diggs gave the Commanders fans a glimpse of his life in Washington. He appeared in a short video from the team’s first fall practice, looking eager to get started.

“Stefon Diggs here. I’m here at the first practice, the first fall practice,” he said. “They out here getting it in, man… go Commanders. Let’s go!”

For Diggs, this is homecoming. He grew up in Gaithersburg, Maryland, before starring for the Maryland Terrapins. Just earlier this summer, he admitted that he hoped one day he would get to play in front of the local fans who watched him grow in the sport. That being said, the journey to homecoming was long and complicated.

Although he was acquitted in May on assault and strangulation charges involving his former chef, many teams waited for the NFL to complete its review before making any move. Once the league had determined that there was insufficient evidence to impose discipline under its personal conduct policy, the veteran receiver’s market finally opened up.

Diggs had 85 catches for 1,013 yards and 4 touchdowns with the New England Patriots last regular season, and went to the first Super Bowl of his 11-year NFL career. Now entering his 12th year, he gives Jayden Daniels exactly what Washington has been looking for.

He is another proven weapon opposite Terry McLaurin. Meanwhile, it’s a win-win situation for both parties. For Washington, the one-year contract is a low-risk, high-upside gamble, and for the 32-year-old, it is yet another prove-it chance after a 1,000-yard campaign. Meanwhile, this signing has also sparked another intriguing storyline.

Well, shortly after the deal got public, his younger brother Trevon Diggs, who is a free agent himself, shared the announcement of his brother on his Instagram with a praying hand emoji. Well, he didn’t provide any explanation, but that has fueled speculation that maybe Stephanie Diggs’ wishes can be realised as a whole. Plus, let’s just say Trevon has a history, adding more fuel to the fire.

He shared a long-standing connection with the head coach of the Commanders, Dan Quinn, from their years together in Dallas. So, Washington could be a great opportunity. While all the prayers seem to have been answered for the Diggs, for someone else, their manifestations aren’t doing the work. Or rather, he might have torpedoed his own chances.

Brandon Aiyuk’s Washington campaign seems over

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk has openly, for months, campaigned to land in Washington. Mostly because of his close relationship with their quarterback Jayden Daniels dating back to their days at Arizona State. He had hinted that reuniting with him was what he wanted and even went as far as calling himself the “final piece” the Commanders needed to win a Super Bowl. But while he was doing that, he was also doing things that might have led him to swing an axe on his own two feet.

A standoff with the Niners was one thing, but his relentless social media campaign has been flagged as a red flag by many around the league.

“Washington had been paying attention to Brandon Aiyuk’s situation with the San Francisco 49ers and, earlier in the offseason, would have had interest if he was available,” writes ESPN’s John Keim. “However, he has yet to be released and, therefore, hasn’t been an immediate option. The Commanders’ potential interest cooled after a series of Instagram posts by Aiyuk, according to team sources.”

Aiyuk’s current roster is also a major obstacle. He is still on San Francisco’s Reserve/Left Squad list, meaning he cannot simply sign elsewhere.  Before the move can happen, he needs to first report to the 49ers’ facility and get released. He cannot join Washington or anywhere else, even if he owns a house nearby.

Washington does have the cap space to sign him, and mid-season injuries could potentially crack the door open a bit. But for now, Diggs’ signing likely has settled matters.
