Essentials Inside The Story

  • Travis Kelce has some incredible memories at Arrowhead Stadium.
  • One of those memories includes his first touchdown at Arrowhead.
  • Kelce will have to make his decision on retirement.

A fanbase roaring louder than the jet engine at 100 feet is only possible at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. That’s the kind of energy the place carries. It’s a place built on noise, memory, and magic. But all good things must come to an end. The stadium has been the team’s home since the 1972 season, but they will move to Wyandotte County starting in 2031. And that move feels more like a personal loss for Travis Kelce.

“I think it’s going to be unbelievable once it’s finally set in stone, but it is going to be kind of heartbreaking knowing that the Chiefs are going to move away from Arrowhead in the Missouri side,” said Travis Kelce on the latest episode of the New Heights podcast. “It’s just a part of the old professional sports.”

Since getting drafted by the Chiefs in 2013, Arrowhead was Kelce’s second home. It was not until Week 4 of the 2014 season that Travis Kelce scored his first touchdown at Arrowhead, a moment he will forever cherish. Back then, the Chiefs defeated Tom Brady‘s Patriots 41-14. But that’s not the only reason Brady would want to forget that game. He was benched because of his rough performance, while Kelce recorded eight catches, 93 yards, and a touchdown.

That game showed how special Kelce was, and it didn’t take long for him to become one of the greatest tight ends ever while playing at Arrowhead.

His last appearance, though, at the stadium was against the Broncos in Week 17, which ended in a disappointing 20-13 loss.

Clearly, Arrowhead hasn’t just been the backdrop to Travis Kelce’s career; it’s been a living part of it. The same can be said for countless Chiefs legends who began their journeys there and said their goodbyes on that very field. And with so many memories etched into its walls, it’s only natural that the stadium now shows the scars of time.

GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium has undergone many renovations

Since its renovation in 2010, the stadium can seat 76,416 people, with 128 executive suites. Thanks to its early construction, Arrowhead is the oldest stadium in the AFC and the fourth-largest stadium in the NFL. While it is the home of the Chiefs for now, it has also hosted other sports and will host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

But that’s not how it all started off. Their first season in 1972, they played in an incomplete facility with temporary scaffolding and temporary stairwells. As other events drew attention to the venue, like Michael Jackson’s concert in 1984, the facilities improved. Over the years, it went through many repairs and renovations.

In fact, last year, officials had been contemplating whether to renovate once again or relocate altogether. It goes without saying that both Kansas State and Missouri proposed their plans for their respective stadiums. But crossing the state borders simply made more sense to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The deal stands as a public-private partnership between the Chiefs and the state of Kansas. It is designed to move forward without pulling money from the current state budget and without placing any new tax burden on Kansans. While the move received complete support from Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt, the move itself will be difficult for the players and fans.

All that said, there is a possibility that Kelce won’t personally have to deal with the move. After all, retirement speculations have been doing the rounds on social media.

Travis Kelce has decided on his NFL future, sources claim

A new report from the Daily Mail seems to have shed some light on Travis Kelce’s retirement speculations earlier this week.

“He was living it up at all the parties with his friends and NFL buddies but it was his time to unwind, have a guys’ weekend, let Taylor do what she wanted to do,” DailyMail was told by a source. “Kelce was telling friends that asked that he has made a decision about his NFL future, and everyone believes 100 per cent that he is coming back.”

In fact, Creed Humphrey, one of Kelce’s most dependable teammates in Kansas City, told DailyMail that he hasn’t discussed the situation with him. His reasoning is simple: Kelce deserves the room to make whatever choice is best for him.

“I haven’t talked to him about it, but obviously, we would all love to have him back,” Humphrey mentioned.

While Kelce himself believes he still has some football left in him, it remains uncertain what his ultimate decision is. With Eric Bieniemy returning as the OC in Kansas City, things could be different in the future. Kelce has a good relationship with Bieniemy, as he was excited after his hiring announcement.

“I can’t wait to see him back in the building, man,” Kelce said in January.

Regardless of whether he returns or not, it’s highly unlikely that he will still be active when the Chiefs shift to the new stadium.
