A Super Bowl champion at 25, Darron Lee is currently being held without bond in Hamilton County Jail. The 31-year-old is indicted on a first-degree murder charge in the death of his girlfriend, Gabriela Carvalho Perpetuo. The charges against Lee make him eligible for capital punishment, which the prosecutors have not ruled out.

Lee’s case will be heard in Hamilton County Criminal Court, where prosecutors have indicated it could potentially become a death penalty case. According to Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp, the prosecutors have not yet decided whether to pursue that sentence. That determination is expected to be made as the legal process moves forward.

Perpetuo’s cause of death was multiple blunt-force injuries. According to the autopsy report, the 12 different injuries included hematomas, fractures, and stab wounds. The incident took place in February, when, as per court records, Lee was on probation in two different states. Those probation terms in both Franklin County, Ohio, and Alachua County, Florida, stemmed from three separate assault-related cases.
Court proceedings saw Lee face accusations regarding the queries he put forth to ChatGPT. As reported by the Associated Press, the former NFL linebacker asked AI if falling in the shower can lead to bruising to the two eyes and “two stabby-looking wounds,” according to evidence presented in court.
At his bond hearing on February 11, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Detective Brian Lockhart described a violent crime scene.
“There was blood going up the staircase on the uh on the handrailing. There’s blood on the walls. There was blood on the floor in the living room. There was blood in the floor in the hallway upstairs. There was blood in just about every room except for, I believe, one room we didn’t find any blood in.”
Lockhart also revealed that glass was shattered throughout the home before highlighting the presence of alcohol bottles all around the place.
Although Lee has been in the Hamilton County Jail without bond, this tragic incident isn’t the first time the former Chiefs linebacker has faced legal trouble.
Darron Lee was on probation for three alleged assault charges while facing capital punishment
Darron Lee entered the NFL as the 20th overall pick by the Jets in the 2016 NFL Draft. Expectations were sky high as he had won the Defensive MVP in the 2015 Sugar Bowl on the back of seven tackles and two sacks. However, Lee’s time in the league never worked out, as he made just 36 starts in three seasons with the Jets. In 2018, he violated the NFL’s Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse and received a four-game suspension to close out his tenure with the team that drafted him.
The Chiefs then signed him in free agency ahead of their Super Bowl-winning campaign, in which he started just two games and played 160 defensive snaps across the regular season. He entered free agency again and then moved to the Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders before bowing out of the league in 2021.
Two years later, in April 2023, Lee was involved in a horrific incident as he was arrested and charged with misdemeanors of assault and domestic violence for attacking his own mother and the mother of his two-year-old son in Dublin, Ohio.
In 2024, Lee allegedly pointed a gun at a man at Cross Creek Fish Camp and was charged with aggravated assault. Per the Alachua Chronicle, Lee had reportedly warned the victim of an alligator in the area but denied harming him. Also, the victim claimed Lee pushed him down as he ran away after the gun was pointed at him. While the victim’s friend backed his claim, the deputy reported that there were no injuries consistent with falling.
Darron Lee’s story is one of the most tragic falls from grace in recent NFL history. A Super Bowl champion who once had the world at his feet now faces the possibility of capital punishment for the death of his girlfriend. With a lengthy criminal record already behind him, the coming weeks will determine just how severe the consequences will be.
