The Kansas City Chiefs were desperate for a Week 15 win to keep their season alive. Instead, the game ended in a painful 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers and a grave setback for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He tore both his ACL and LCL, which ultimately ended his season. But what raised eyebrows was the player’s latest decision regarding his health. A FOX host believes the move hints at Mahomes’ deeper trust issues.

“You’re telling me that Patrick Mahomes has such little faith and trust in the Kansas City Chiefs medical staff, that he got on a plane and went to Dallas, had the Cowboys physician take a look at him. And had the Cowboys physician do the procedure?” Craig Carton of FOX said on The Craig Carton Show.

“It is very telling that the guy who represents the only chance your franchise has for long-term success moving forward, not only didn’t trust your medical staff, but he didn’t trust you [ownership],” Carton added.

For context, Patrick Mahomes flew to Dallas and underwent surgery on Monday to repair his torn ACL. The procedure was performed by Dr. Dan Cooper, a renowned orthopedist and the team physician of the Dallas Cowboys.

And while Carton believes Mahomes getting surgery done in Dallas signals trust issues, he might very well be wrong.

After all, Dr. Cooper is a leading medical professional who invented and co-developed the Single Portal Arthroscopy system (Stryker Endoscopy), which offers an innovative way to perform arthroscopic surgery with fewer incisions.

He is an expert in minimally invasive arthroscopic and reconstructive techniques for shoulders and knees. And this specialization could have been a big reason Mahomes chose to trust Dr. Cooper.

For now, the player will focus on getting better. The typical recovery period for such an injury is around nine months. That means the 30-year-old could miss the start of next season. The 2026 NFL season opener is Sept. 10.

While Mahomes is busy recuperating for now, Craig Carton also questioned the Chiefs’ ownership.

After speaking about Mahomes’ alleged distrust, Carton said: “That tells you all you need to know about how Kansas City runs its franchise and why the players have given it failing grades from an ownership standpoint for a number of years now.”

To understand his criticism, let us go back to February 2024. Reports suggested that Chiefs’ owner, Clark Hunt, ranked as the league’s worst team owner in the NFLPA poll.

Players for all 32 teams were polled in 11 different categories: treatment of families, food/cafeteria, nutritionist/dietician, locker room, training room, training staff, weight room, strength coaches, team travel, head coach, and owner. Kansas City players graded their team owner last in the league, signaling frustration in the locker room.

But it doesn’t end there.

In the overall ranking, the Chiefs finished almost at the bottom of the league. It was 31st overall, only above the Washington Commanders. That was a shocking poll outcome for a team that made back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. When Hunt was asked about the pitiful grades he got from his team, his answer barely touched upon the issues.

“We did completely renovate the locker room in the stadium a couple years ago, so I’m not sure which locker room [the survey] is referring to,” Hunt told reporters back then before adding that more changes were in the pipeline.

And so, Carton believes that Mahomes’ distrust stems from a lack of adequate support or resources from the team’s ownership.
