Essentials Inside The Story
- Kansas City trades key defensive star Trent McDuffie, leaving teammates stunned.
- Chiefs receive multiple draft picks including No. 29 overall while shedding salary cap pressure.
- McDuffie move ties into larger financial reset as Kansas City restructured Mahomes' contract again.
The NFL offseason drama has begun with the Los Angeles Rams completing a blockbuster trade for Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie. There was speculation due to the Chiefs’ cap hit, but no confirmation until ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the trade. After the news broke, Kansas City’s players were left in shock for a very obvious reason.

During the last three seasons, McDuffie emerged as one of the most important pieces of the Chiefs’ defense, trailing only Chris Jones in overall impact. Used both in the slot and on the outside, the player proved highly effective in coverage while also contributing as a blitzer. No wonder star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and other teammates were in shock over McDuffie’s trade.
“Damn,” Mahomes wrote on X before his teammate Xavier Worthy also shared a similar reaction with his tweet:

“😭😭noooooooooooooooo.”
Similarly, defensive end Charles Omenihu reacted: “Wheww.”
For Chiefs general manager Brett Veach, McDuffie was the first draft selection and also the highest draft pick of his tenure. The player was drafted in 2022, a draft class that featured the likes of defensive end George Karlaftis, running back Isiah Pacheco, safety Bryan Cook, linebacker Leo Chenal, and cornerback Jaylen Watson. And it was this draft class that helped the Chiefs establish themselves as a dynasty.

During that stretch, the Kansas City Chiefs captured consecutive Super Bowl titles and returned to the championship again in 2024, becoming the first back-to-back winner to reach a third straight Super Bowl. Across ten postseason appearances in that run, McDuffie recorded 13 pass breakups along with one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
So, people were shocked to know he got traded, despite the speculations since February. But don’t count the Rams’ Puka Nacua as a part of those who are stunned.

He was elated to know McDuffie would be on his side the next season and even went to the extent of digging up an old tweet from 2019 when he praised McDuffie.
“22!!!!! I see you Trent,” Nacua reshared the tweet with a smile emoji.
Damn..

The Rams’ side is clearly happy. After all, they needed a player like McDuffie. Last season, many analysts viewed the defensive backfield as one of the roster’s weakest areas entering the offseason. All that said, the positivity isn’t one-sided. At least, that’s what one would assume, knowing what he said last August, when asked about which other team he would love playing for.
“You’re going to get me in trouble,” McDuffie said then. “Let’s think. If I could play for another team, I’d probably want to play close to my family, so that would probably be the L.A. Rams so that my family could come see every single game.”
Originally from Southern California, McDuffie completed his final year of high school football at St. John Bosco High School. But things don’t end here.

The signing also brings a reunion with his former college coach, Jimmy Lake.
Lake, who worked with the University of Washington program from 2014 to 2021, now serves the Los Angeles team’s coaching staff as the pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach. And as things currently stand, McDuffie, who is entering the final season of his rookie deal, is expected to sign a long-term extension with the Rams.

Despite his contributions, Trent McDuffie’s exit will give the Chiefs some relief
McDuffie’s best individual season was in 2024, when he recorded two interceptions and 13 pass breakups, both career highs, along with 59 tackles, four quarterback hits, and one forced fumble. Looking over his overall numbers, McDuffie recorded 34 pass deflections, eight forced fumbles, and three interceptions, along with 246 total tackles, including 178 solo stops.
Furthermore, PFF graded Trent McDuffie as the 12th-best nickel last season while describing him as “one of the most well-rounded cornerbacks in the NFL” as he finished top 18 in coverage (74.7, 17th), run-defense (78.5, 14th), and tackling (83.1, third) grades.

Although the Chiefs will be without McDuffie, the franchise receives the No. 29 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, along with a fifth-round, a sixth-round, and a 2027 third-round pick.

Furthermore, Kansas City will also receive massive financial relief as it entered 2026 more than $57 million over the cap. Before the trade, the team still needed to clear more than $14 million in effective cap space, per Over The Cap. That’s where McDuffie’s exit helps.
As an immediate effect, Kansas City can look to erase the $13.6 million salary that the player was due in 2026.
The McDuffie trade, however, is just one piece of a larger financial puzzle Kansas City has been working to solve. They also released tackle Jawaan Taylor, which meant that they can forget the $20-million cap assigned to him, as well as cut defensive end Mike Danna. They saved an additional $8.9 million.

The franchise has also made other calculated moves, like restructuring Patrick Mahomes’ blockbuster contract.
Chiefs restructure Patrick Mahomes’ contract for financial relief
The Kansas City Chiefs restructured Patrick Mahomes to create much-needed salary cap space ahead of the 2026 season. This has been the fourth consecutive year that Brett Veach and Co. have restructured Mahomes’ massive 10-year, $450 million contract, which the QB1 signed in 2020.
Under this restructuring, the team has managed to convert $54.45 million of Mahomes’ 2026 salary into a signing bonus and lower the star quarterback’s cap number to $34.65 million.
With the McDuffie trade and Mahomes’ restructure, the Chiefs are clearly prioritizing financial flexibility to reload their roster after a disappointing 2025 season. How Kansas City uses this newfound cap space will go a long way in determining whether they can return to Super Bowl contention in 2026.
