In the spring of 2022, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid made a tough decision after a disappointing AFC Championship Game loss. He went on to trade their star wide receiver, Tyreek Hill, to the Miami Dolphins for draft picks. Now, four years later and after yet another disappointing season, Reid is staring at the same crossroads again, and this time, Trent McDuffie is playing the role of Hill.

On Wednesday, the Chiefs traded the cornerback to the Los Angeles Rams. Now he is not just another name in the roster. He has helped the Chiefs win back-to-back Super Bowls and reach another championship game in 2024. This move has shocked everyone, from fans to even the locker room. Even Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes reacted to it, with his response clearly suggesting that perhaps he had no inkling of this being in the works.

“Damn,” is all he wrote.

This one-word response sums up the utter disappointment of losing one of the best defense players on the roster. McDuffie recorded 178 solo tackles, eight forced fumbles, and three interceptions during his time with the team. Not just Mahomes; inside the Chiefs’ training facility, the mood was just as gloomy.

According to a team source, head coach Andy Reid, general manager Brett Veach, and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo shared a similar disappointment over the decision. Other players, like wide receiver Xavier Worthy, wrote a long “noooooooooooooooo,” while defensive end Charles Omenihu posted “Wheww.” Fellow cornerback Jaylen Watson also showed disappointment as the team said goodbye to one of its top defenders. However, while the disappointment can be understandable, the Chiefs did get a good return, too.

The team received the No. 29 overall pick along with fifth- and sixth-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft and a third-round pick in 2027.

Moreover, for McDuffie, the move is also like a familiar reunion. Over in Los Angeles, he will work again with Jimmy Lake. He was McDuffie’s former head coach and defensive coordinator at the University of Washington and is now serving as the Rams’ passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach.

Nevertheless, one thing is clear: real change is underway in Kansas. And after missing the playoffs for the first time in over a decade, a season that was already complicated due to Mahomes’ injury, this retooling phase seemed inevitable. McDuffie might be the first step towards many decisions for the Chiefs because the road ahead looks far from easy for them.

The Chiefs are gearing up for a tough road ahead of the 2026 season

The Chiefs are set to face one of the toughest schedules in the NFL next season. They are already competing in a challenging division along with the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers, and will also face teams from the NFC West, some of the league’s toughest divisions. But given that they made the McDuffie move, they also need someone capable to replace him.

Cornerback Josh Jobe from the Seattle Seahawks could be an option. He had 90 solo tackles, half a sack, and an interception last season. Nick Cross is another candidate, with 72 solo tackles, 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception. Safety Alohi Gilman could also help, as he recorded 39 solo tackles with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2025.

Moreover, now by trading McDuffie, the Chiefs have saved about $13.6 million. So this means they have more room to make certain moves before free agency begins. They could target key players at key spots. For example, running back and pass rushers are two areas the team might look for help.

Now, General Manager Brett Veach recently spoke about the team’s new direction during the offseason.

“The last few years, we were kind of just, like, in a maintenance stage,” Veach said. “Now we’re trying to rebuild this thing again. For a GM and a personnel staff, that’s exciting.”

But the question is, how much of it is believable? Given that the Chiefs have drafted well in the secondary. At the same time, they have hesitated in paying market value to their DBs. Even L’Jarius Sneed was similarly traded two years ago. At the end of the day, replacing a player of McDuffie’s caliber, a cornerstone of their recent Super Bowl runs, will be the front office’s next great challenge as they work to keep the team’s championship window wide open.
