The 36-year-old’s new contract is a one-year deal for the 2026 campaign, which could potentially be his final season in the league. The financial structure of the deal is quite interesting, as he has agreed to take a cut of $5 million, reflecting his priority to play for the championship over a massive paycheck. Kelce’s base payout sits at $12 million compared to his previous $17 million, but with performance-based incentives, the cap hit could reach $15 million. This is the fifth contract of his NFL career.
This move has provided general manager Brett Veach the necessary breathing room to patch a roster that looked uncharacteristically thin in 2025. With more signings in free agency and Kelce returning, the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense will now look different. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes will have enough help and flexibility.
During the 2025 season, Kelce racked up 76 receptions for 851 yards and five touchdowns, leading the team in all three categories. It was his 12th straight season with at least 800 receiving yards, tying the legendary Jerry Rice for the longest streak in NFL history.

So far, the seven-time All-Pro owns nearly every major milestone for the team, including all-time receiving yards (13,002), receptions (1,080), total touchdowns (85), and 100-yard receiving games (38). He is the only NFL player with 178 career postseason receptions. All these have firmly cemented his legacy as one of the game’s most productive pass catchers.
Certainly, he did not want to end his illustrious career on a depressing note after a tumultuous 2025 season, which is why he will be back on the gridiron with more drive and determination. But this time he has a message for his teammates, including his quarterback.

Travis Kelce puts his teammates on notice ahead of the 2026 season
The primary catalyst for Kelce’s return isn’t just the contract or money but a stinging 6-11 finish in 2025. The season was derailed in Week 15 when QB Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending torn ACL during a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Without Mahomes, the offense struggled, and the Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
Appearing on the Pat McAfee Show, he talked about his next season’s goal while putting his teammates on notice.

“I think the biggest thing coming back was that we got to be even hungrier than we’ve been before,” said Kelce in this week’s episode. “Talking to Pat, talking to Coach Reid and the guys, it’s pretty. There’s a lot of dog mentality right now to get this thing fixed. That mentality itself is already kind of motivating me to get to where I need to be during the season.”

His message was clear: Don’t wait for opportunities; create them and challenge yourself to reclaim the lost entitlement of the Chiefs dynasty.

While Kelce remains the heartbeat of the passing game, Coach Reid is revamping the system to ease the workload of Mahomes in 2026. The most exciting addition of free agency so far has been Kenneth Walker III, the reigning Super Bowl LX MVP.
Walker, fresh off a 1,027-yard season and a perfect 135-yard performance with the Seattle Seahawks, signed a three-year, $45 million deal. His arrival marks the first time since Kareem Hunt in 2017 that the Chiefs have signed a true RB standout who can consistently put up 1,000 yards on the board. No more Mahomes will have to worry about the run game while also leading with the passing attack.
With Mahomes expected to be ready for Week 1, the Mahomes-Kelce-Walker trio represents a balanced offensive force in the AFC West. With the No. 9 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft, Reid can now look for more options other than the Notre Dame standout Jeremiyah Love. The options can extend to defensive players and even a tight end to fill the void for Kelce if he decides to hang up the cleats by the end of the 2026 season.
