Randi Mahomes wanted to be the “cool mom.” But raising three kids alone turned her into a disciplinarian. Years later, she credits that “structure” in helping Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes become an MVP-caliber NFL star, with his siblings Jackson and Mia also paving their own identities – Jackson as an influencer, and Mia as a multi-sport athlete. But none of this came without major sacrifices from Randi.

In an interview with Scottsdale City Lifestyle, Randi shared her story – from being a cheerleader for her kids to navigating all the adversities that come with being a single mother to budding athletes. When the interviewer stated, “single parenting is often romanticized when success follows,” she agreed and added her own poignant take.

“People don’t see the constant balancing act,” Randi said. “You have to be the nurturer and the disciplinarian, the provider and the protector. You carry it all, and some days, that’s heavier than anyone realizes.

“I missed a lot… school events, social outings, holidays. I worked long hours to make sure they had what they needed. That was the trade-off, but I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”

Working two jobs for a decade, sleeping in her car between tournaments, Randi Mahomes did everything she could to help her kids. As for Patrick, he showed early signs of excellence, giving Randi the drive to push him harder. At just three, Patrick would play football better than older kids. Seeing that, Randi consistently pitted him against older kids. As Patrick’s sports acumen grew, so did his portfolio. T-ball, basketball, baseball – he did it all, with Randi firmly rooted in his corner.

“When scouts started showing up- especially during his junior and senior years- it became overwhelming,” Randi added in her interview. “I wanted Patrick to enjoy being a teenager, but suddenly we were making life-changing decisions. That pressure weighs heavily on a parent’s heart. I always knew he had something special, but when major league baseball scouts started showing up at his games, I realized this wasn’t just a phase.”

Now, Patrick would have become an MLB star, if it hadn’t been for Kliff Kingsbury. In the 2014 MLB Draft, he was picked in the 37th round by the Detroit Tigers. Just one signature on a contract, and we wouldn’t have gotten our 3x Super Bowl champion. Mahomes’ goal, as he outlined in a 2024 interview, was to “play three years of football, three years of baseball, and go [back] into the MLB draft. But Kingsbury (his Texas Tech head coach at the time) told him to give a full year to football, convinced that it would be enough to solidify Mahomes as a first-rounder. Kingsbury was right.

Now, Patrick Mahomes is a franchise quarterback who has three Super Bowl rings and Super Bowl MVP titles. The cherry on the cake? Mahomes is now the only player in NFL history to have a total contract value of over half a billion dollars. But none of this would have happened without Randi’s sacrifices.

As for Randi, she’s not done with her own sports story. Last May, she launched the Sports Parent Academy – an online educational platform that tries to make the jobs of athlete parents easier.

As Patrick Mahomes gears up for his 10th NFL season in the hopes of his sixth Super Bowl appearance, we know none of it would have been possible without his mother choosing his dream over her own comfort – working two jobs, sleeping in her car, and doing everything she could to give the world one of the greatest athletes it has ever seen.
