The crowd at Xfinity Movie Arena was all excited to see Jason Kelce’s much-awaited dunk attempt. But that moment never came. After weeks of hype and training, the football center shared a concerning update that derailed his non-football move. The brother of Kansas City Chiefs’ Travis Kelce revealed that an injury forced him to postpone the dunk, leaving both football and basketball fans gutted.

“I’m sorry guys, we should have announced that I got injured, and had to postpone,” Kelce said on X. “That is completely my fault.”

On Thursday, Jason Kelce took to social media to address fans who were waiting for his dunk-attempt that was originally going to take place during the Philadelphia 76ers’ game against the Sacramento Kings on January 29. While Kelce took the blame on himself, he didn’t specify the nature or severity of his injury. Shortly after his announcement, PHLY Sports reporter Derek Bodner officially confirmed the postponement of Kelce’s plan.

The idea first gained traction in December when the Philadelphia Eagles legend announced it on the New Heights podcast. He admitted to having started a 30-day training routine to finish a slam dunk. In one of the podcast episodes, he even shared a video of his progress, showing him dunking a volleyball. As if this wasn’t enough to build the buzz, the 76ers officially offered him the spotlight to try it live.

For now, fans wait for Kelce to lock in the date for his big plan. Since the player’s fitness was never in question, that moment may arrive soon. Despite hanging up the cleats in March 2024, he hasn’t given up on training like a professional athlete. In October, the Eagles released a workout video featuring Kelce going through a standard football training session. He reportedly reached nearly 19.72 miles per hour during a sprint.

Of course, football athleticism doesn’t always prove one’s ability on the basketball court. Plus, dunking at age 38 is far from easy. Still, Jason Kelce has never backed away from a challenge. With the 76ers still having 15 home games on their schedule, fans will probably see him taking his shot at the rim. Beyond sports, the Super Bowl champion has made a move with sports broadcasting giant ESPN.

Jason Kelece pulls the plug on his solo project with ESPN

After walking away from the NFL two years ago, Kelce blossomed into a media powerhouse. His charming personality earned him multiple television stints and made him a household name in broadcasting. However, he peaked differently through his solo project in collaboration with ESPN. They Call It Late Night with Jason Kelce, a late-night variety show that fortified his opposition away from the league.

The program first aired during the 2025 season, combining football talk with comedy sketches and celebrity interviews. Performed before a live audience, this was an uncommon yet original format for ESPN. However, the company doesn’t plan to renew the show for a second season. The move first reported by Awful Announcing on Thursday has nothing to do with Kelce’s performance or even ratings. Instead, Kelce and ESPN mutually decided to conclude the project following a strategic shift.

“Neu News (sorry, I know, I know). Awful Announcing has learned that ESPN and Jason Kelce won’t be seeking a second season of his late-night show in 2026,” Awful Announcing’s Sam Neumann wrote on X. “That doesn’t mean the show has been canceled, but Kelce will explore other creative opportunities.”

Even without the show, Kelce remains actively involved with ESPN. He will continue as an analyst on Monday Night Countdown and will participate in special coverage, such as the NHL Stadium Series. There, Kelce will sit in the “Best Seat in the House” at ice level, interviewing a group of guests throughout the game. While one door closes, Jason Kelce has found another to showcase his broadcasting talent.
