Essentials Inside The Story
- Main shakeup as Harbaugh resets Chargers’ offensive coaching staff
- Exit rumors emerge amid playoff frustrations and rebuild push, reuniting Mike McDaniel with many of his former coaches
- McDaniel-led offense, cap space fuel AFC West buzz for next season
The revolving door on the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive coaching staff just spun again. Under Jim Harbaugh, Mike McDaniel is now at the helm of the offense, and he has clearly found some loopholes in the coaching staff. So, entering the first official week after Super Bowl LX, the Chargers have announced another decision in the rebuild.

According to CBS Sports’ sources, the Chargers and run game coordinator/tight ends coach Andy Bischoff are expected to part ways. With that, the team will have five new offensive coaches next season.
When Harbaugh came to LA in 2024, his first message to the fans was that “there won’t be any magic formulas.” Although he did help the team, ranking 21st in points to 11th in just one season, it wasn’t enough.
One of the first things the head coach did this season, after the wild-card loss to the eventual Super Bowl finalists, the New England Patriots, was fire Greg Roman. The latter was his offensive coordinator since his tenure in San Francisco. However, that wasn’t his only decision. After bringing in McDaniel at Roman’s place, the team looked to improve their offense further.
With that, Bischoff’s name was struck out as well.
In two seasons with Bischoff, Los Angeles posted a solid 22–12 record and reached the playoffs both years. He also helped rookie Oronde Gadsden rank 11th among NFL TEs with 664 receiving yards. But a 0-2 playoff record told a harsher story.
What’s quite interesting is that, with this firing, McDaniel’s former assistant, Jon Embree, could see doors open for him.

In his time in Miami since 2022, Embree had a 35-33-0 record. He also has experience with the San Francisco 49ers after Harbaugh departed for Michigan. With his extensive experience as a former tight end himself and over two decades as a tight end coach in the NFL, Embree could very well see himself sporting powder blue and sunshine gold next season.
Already, the Chargers are in a hurry to create their elite coaching staff before they can architect the next year’s roster.
Harbaugh didn’t wait around after the wild-card loss, even when he fired offensive line coach Mike Devlin. Moreover, the Chargers are bringing in former Jets and Dolphins head coach Adam Gase as an assistant coach to oversee the passing game.
Interestingly, while the two have coached the same team, their paths have never crossed before. Now, they are reuniting in LA, with McDaniel as Gase’s coach. Gase’s career arc is the reason this hire stands out in the bigger picture. He made his name quickly as Denver’s offensive coordinator in 2013 and 2014, during Peyton Manning’s historic run when the Broncos scored a record 606 points in 2013.
Overall, multiple names from the Dolphins are flying into LA to reunite with McDaniel this season, who is already proving to be a big move for the Chargers.
Mike McDaniel’s addition boosts AFC West title chances for 2026
Various outlets have started leaning hard into Los Angeles as the favorite in the AFC West, and it isn’t hard to see why. From unprecedented cap flexibility to key stars returning and a splashy offensive makeover, the Chargers are checking all the boxes that pundits say are necessary to win a division.
- Money has become the Chargers’ biggest weapon. Sitting on nearly $100 million in cap space, Los Angeles has the rare freedom to fix problems instead of juggling them. While AFC West rivals brace for tough cuts and restructures, the Chargers can add impact talent.
- Mike McDaniel’s arrival as offensive coordinator injects confidence, especially with new coaches at the helm. Unfortunately, his 0-2 postseason record with the Dolphins is all too similar to the Chargers’ recent woes. But there were other factors, too, which affected his run in Miami.
- Getting Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater back together instantly transforms the offense, giving the Chargers one of the most reliable tackle pairings in football.
The coaching reset is aimed at giving Justin Herbert better protection and a clearer system so he can hit his ceiling. Already believed to be the favorites, the team will be eager to improve on its inability to get Wild Card wins in recent years.
