Jeremiyah Love brought all the hype in during the Arizona Cardinals‘ preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders on August 13 at Allegiant Stadium. However, his run during the game was cut short, and former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III has all the blame indirectly pointed towards HC Mike LaFleur and other stakeholders responsible for a player’s minutes during a matchup.

“Who in their right mind would not have a problem with how the Cardinals use Jeremiyah Love? He was picked third overall. So, it’s absolutely idiotic to give him 14 touches in the first preseason game,” Griffin said on Outta Pocket with RGIII. “They’ve cut preseason games out of the schedule to try to keep guys healthy.

“And the real reason you get upset about that is the running back position is such an unforgiving position. They are going to get hit, people. They are going to be put in harm’s way. And then you got this guy who, it doesn’t matter if he’s running in the parking lot. He’s going to give it everything he absolutely has. And now he’s got an ankle injury. And you know why that really, really sucks? It’s not just the overuse. That was stupid. Complete mismanagement, malpractice. But now he’s got an ankle injury. And ankle injuries linger.”

Jeremiyah Love started the game against the Las Vegas Raiders. And right from the get-go, the No. 3 overall pick out of Notre Dame showcased all the hype around his running game.

Love recorded 11 carries for 58 yards, ripping off multiple gains of over 10 yards. Along with that, he also added 3 receptions for 14 yards. And by the end of his first-half stint, the 21-year-old RB finished the game with 72 total yards on 14 touches.

While Love’s performance impressed many, the way he went out of the game pointed fingers at the Arizona Cardinals’ management. On his 24th and final offensive snap of the first half, a Raiders defender grabbed Love and executed a hip-drop tackle.

While the defender unweighted his body, it trapped Love’s lower leg and twisted his ankle. In the immediate aftermath, Mike LaFleur & Co. benched the rookie RB as a precautionary step.

However, the severity of that particular ankle twist moment was revealed a day later. Jeremiyah Love arrived at the Arizona Cardinals’ training facility experiencing soreness and swelling, prompting immediate medical imaging. And per the subsequent tests, a confirmed ankle sprain was diagnosed.

Due to this, Love has been officially ruled out for the remainder of the preseason games against the Dallas Cowboys on August 22 and the Green Bay Packers on August 28.

Robert Griffin III, who spent eight seasons in the NFL, believes ankle injuries stay longer than usual. Hence, he is quite displeased with how HC Mike LaFleur & Co. managed Jeremiyah Love in the preseason opener.
