The Shedeur Sanders benching drama in Cleveland has been the most speculated upon all week by Browns supporters. The Browns’ offense is sputtering, the quarterback situation at hand, and the fan base is seething in that adrenaline high, still in the dark, waiting to find out when the rookie phenom will ever hit the field. But in all the growing furor over the locker room, there is one definite, deafening voice demanding patience and faith.

Talking to EssentiallySports in an exclusive interview, ESPN analyst Matt Miller did not mince words regarding the scandal when offering his thoughts on Sanders’ Cleveland future and status. Miller had no qualms in expressing to us his support of Stefanski regarding quarterback safety and protection, ”I believe that if he was worthy of starting, Kevin Stefanski would start him. I think coaches want to win games. That’s their job.”

After a 32-13 loss to the New England Patriots, Cleveland is 2-6 with its offensively struggling group. Rookie QB Dillon Gabriel, who took over from veteran Joe Flacco, has been unable to offer consistency. With the last performance against New England, Gabriel was 21 of 35 for 156 yards and two touchdowns, but his two costly interceptions sent the Browns to the sidelines.

For a struggling team grappling with mounting frustration, the latest loss felt like another step in the wrong direction, and it reignited a familiar question: Is it time for Shedeur Sanders to take over? While speculation swirls, Miller urged patience and perspective, pointing to the importance of trust in coaching decisions.

“I’m a believer in letting coaches coach,” Miller told our host at EssentiallySports, Andrew Whitelaw, emphasizing the staff’s offensive track record and daily involvement with the players. “They’re in the building every day. I’m not.” His comments reflect a broader sentiment within the organization that experience and vision from the sidelines still carry weight, even amid growing uncertainty.

Miller completely trusts the head coach’s instinct, as he is a two-time winner of the Coach of the Year award. He concluded by saying, ”So, until we have any evidence that Sanders should be playing over Gabriel, I think you have to trust the guys who are there every day doing the work.”

Cleveland’s record slips, and the offense is approaching the league’s worst in several key categories. Sanders, elevated to QB2 following Joe Flacco’s trade, continues to wait patiently for an opportunity.

However, the rookie himself felt that it was his time to get on the field. As reported by Stainbrook, Browns’ beat reporter shared on X, “Browns QB Shedeur Sanders liked my Instagram post where I called for the team to start the former Colorado quarterback following the bye week.”

Kevin Stefanski’s approach to the quarterback situation

Much-hyped rookie and NFL legend Deion Sanders’ son, Shedeur Sanders, rides the pine.

When asked by Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com whether he’s considering turning to Shedeur Sanders at quarterback, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski quickly dismissed the notion. “The focus is where we are right now, Mary Kay,” Stefanski said, adding, “That’s not my focus.” His response underscored the team’s commitment to staying present and addressing its immediate challenges rather than entertaining potential lineup changes.

The reaction was classic Stefanski, serene, even-keeled, and resolute in the heat of the moment. But Browns supporters are rapidly disappearing. At 2-6, the team comfortably finds itself out of playoff life within the merciless AFC, and the latter half of the year can be employed to gauge the potential of the rookie quarterback. Four games won’t actually test Gabriel, but its apparent the Browns’ problem on offense is bigger than one person.

Browns will play the New York Jets after their bye week. And now, only time will tell when, in reality, Sanders will get his chance.
