In 2012, Jimmy Haslam acquired the Cleveland Browns from Randy Lerner for over $1 billion, stepping forward with a pledge that captured the imagination of Northeast Ohio. The truck-stop magnate proclaimed himself “fired up to the max” and committed to restoring glory to a franchise long deprived of consistent success. Over a decade later, the record remains stark: despite numerous leadership changes and substantial investments, the team has secured only one playoff victory during his ownership.

Cleveland Browns supporters have viewed this persistent shortfall against the backdrop of the Haslams’ broadening sports investments. In 2023, Jimmy and Dee Haslam purchased a 25% minority stake in the Milwaukee Bucks, valuing the NBA franchise at approximately $3.2 billion, where Jimmy now serves as co-governor. At the May 2026 press conference, while introducing new Bucks coach Taylor Jenkins, Haslam was asked questions about his deeper involvement.

“Do I think we’ll be here more? I do,” Jimmy Haslam said in the press conference. “Very, very excited to continue working with Jon, and we’ve already established a great relationship with Taylor to work with him and the guys to build the kind of team that this community deserves.”

Aside from the Browns and the Bucks, Haslam Sports Group also owns the soccer team, the Columbus Crew. Among all the teams under his ownership, Crew is the only team that has won a trophy in recent years, with its win coming in the 2024 Leagues Cup.

Despite the recent comments, Haslam Sports Group will keep managing the Browns. His son-in-law, JW Johnson, is an executive and partner on the team.

As managing partner, Johnson anchors Haslam Sports Group and directs business operations across the Browns, Columbus Crew, and Milwaukee Bucks. He co-founded the group in 2019 with Jimmy and Dee Haslam and his wife, Whitney, concentrating on media, marketing, partnerships, fan experience, and digital strategy.

Johnson had advised on the 2023 Bucks acquisition and spearheaded Browns initiatives such as the 2020 hires of coach Kevin Stefanski and GM Andrew Berry. He ensures continuity in Cleveland even as Jimmy shifts toward the NBA, with recent highlights including his leadership in the $2.4 billion Huntington Bank Field rebuild.

On the other hand, while Browns fans will be worried about divided attention, Jimmy Haslam follows a familiar path among NFL owners like Stan Kroenke (Nuggets and Broncos), Gayle Benson (Pelicans and Saints), and Josh Harris (76ers and Commanders).

Kroenke’s $21 billion empire delivered a 2023 NBA title, while Benson and Harris post playoff wins. Haslam’s $9.07 billion Haslam Sports Group spans three leagues but holds zero NFL championships, paired with a 70-123-1 record since 2012.

Jimmy Haslam insists he avoids meddling in football, but he oversaw the Browns’ gravest errors over 14 years. He championed the 2014 Johnny Manziel draft, endorsed the ill-fated Paul DePodesta Moneyball push, and signed off on Deshaun Watson’s 2022 deal. Critics branded the fully guaranteed $230 million contract franchise malpractice. Watson appeared in only 19 games over four seasons.

Despite the shadow cast by these developments, at the start of the season, Jimmy Haslam issued a public challenge to the team, which the team has seemingly passed.

Browns Overcome Jimmy Haslam’s 120-Day Offseason Challenge

The Browns’ front office had made public the decision to fire head coach Kevin Stefanski in January this year. The same day, Jimmy Haslam led the press conference and called the upcoming 120 days ‘crucial’ for the future of the NBA side. That deadline passed this Tuesday with little fanfare but plenty of action.

Cleveland moved quickly to find a head coach, with their search only lasting three weeks. By the end of January, they had named Todd Monken as their new leader. He wasn’t the flashy pick many expected, but his experience makes him a very solid choice. After this, their focus shifted entirely to the 2026 NFL Draft. GM Andrew Berry spent months doing his due diligence before the clock started on April 23.

On paper, this is easily the most impressive draft since he joined the team in 2020. The GM prioritized picking up offensive playmakers and line support to bolster their roster. In the first round of the draft, Berry picked Spencer Fano and wide receiver KC Concepcion. This was a historic decision as it was the first time the franchise picked up two WRs in their top 40 picks. In the second round, they set their eyes on the wide receiver Denzel Boston.

Now that Browns’ athletes arrive at the minicamp, the pressure of Jimmy Haslam’s 120-day challenge is over. When this deadline ended on May 5, the front office would have felt that they had actually met the challenge. While success is never guaranteed in the NFL, the foundation for the Browns feels remarkably solid for the first time in years.
