Essentials Inside The Story
- In addition to his foot, Josh Allen played through multiple injuries
- One of the issues began in Week 16 and was aggravated during the playoffs
- The Bills have already begun the search for McDermott’s replacement, focusing on candidates with a familiarity to the organization
Entering the divisional clash against the Denver Broncos, Josh Allen was listed on the Buffalo Bills’ injury list for three reasons. After nursing one of them since Week 16 of the regular season, it might need to be addressed this offseason, as confirmed by GM Brandon Beane.

“He could have to have something done to his foot potentially here soon,” Brandon Beane said, as reported by Fox Sports’ Henry McKenna.
The injury emerged as a talking point after Buffalo’s Week 16 win over the Cleveland Browns, though Allen remained in the lineup and was cleared to continue playing following evaluations. He re-aggravated the injury as his foot became sore once again in the Bills’ 13-12 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. But, while he mentioned all was good, the signs were there.

In that Eagles loss, Allen attempted 35 passes from the pocket, his first game with 20-plus attempted passes. His scrambling also diminished. However, head coach Sean McDermott knew he would have to wrestle him to keep him out of the game. But before he could sit down and think about the defeat, he was taken in for an X-ray by athletic trainer Nate Breske. They all came out negative.

In Buffalo’s wild-card win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the 29-year-old also developed issues with his left knee and a right finger that hit his own teammate in the pocket. Subsequently, he was also listed with knee and finger injuries heading into the game against the Broncos.

While he brought out Superman again, the signs of him not being one hundred percent returned. In the AFC Divisional Round, Allen visibly struggled, throwing 25-of-39 passes for 283 yards, along with four of Buffalo’s five turnovers.
In light of this, McKenna’s report further revealed that the medical procedure would be precautionary in nature before highlighting that Allen’s participation in organized team activities (OTAs) would not be affected. He did not reveal whether Allen will certainly have a procedure done or when it will happen.

Considering the Bills had scheduled their 2025 season OTAs on May 27-29, June 2-3, and June 5, it can give a certain idea for the timeline that the team may follow this year.
Allen failing to recover in time would certainly leave the team in disarray, especially after Sean McDermott’s firing and the Bills’ recent playoff predicament. The loss was a distraught idea in itself, but it got worse when the team lost because of a controversial interception call on Josh Allen’s late-game throw to Brandin Cooks. Now, owner Terry Pegula has given his stance on it.

If there is any takeaway from the Bills’ Divisional loss against the Broncos, the point boils down to the much-debated refereeing decision in overtime. With 7:55 remaining in overtime and the game tied at 30-30, Allen threw a pass to his wide receiver, Bradin Cooks.
He jumped into the air and caught the ball, but Broncos cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian was following him like a shadow. As he fell to the ground, his knee seemingly touched the ground, but McMillian came out with the ball. His celebration only gained more weight as the referee sided with him.

However, the Bills didn’t. Nor did their owner, Pegula. The owner went over his interaction with an emotional Josh Allen in the locker room after their defeat.

“First thing I said to him, I said, ‘That was a catch.’ We all know what I’m talking about,” Pegula shared. “He didn’t acknowledge me. He just sat there sobbing. He was listless. He had given everything he had to try to win that game. And, looking around, so did all the other players on the team. I saw the pain in Josh’s face at his presser, and I felt his pain. I know we can do better, and I know we will get better.”
The owner further made his point clear about the ref’s call when someone asked why the Bills didn’t make it to the Super Bowl this year: “A bad call.”
Due to that call, Sean McDermott was also fired. As Pegula explained, the decision “was based on the results of our game in Denver.”

“I did not make a coaching change because of an officiating error,” Pegula asserted. “I felt like we hit the proverbial playoff wall year after year — 13 seconds, missed field goals, the catch.”
As these comments highlight, wounds from the loss against Denver are still fresh for the front office. As of now, the team has started taking some active steps and is formally requesting interviews with candidates who are familiar with the organization. Meanwhile, Allen will look to bounce back from the surgery as he also promised to be actively present in the head coach search.
