Jalen Hurts might just be the most underrated quarterback in the league right now. No question – he’s proven himself time and time again. We’re talking Pro Bowler, Super Bowl MVP, and the first $50 million-a-year QB to bring home a Lombardi. That’s huge. To Philly, he’s the guy. The Philadelphia Eagles will build around him every single time they get the chance. But not everyone sees it that way, especially one of Andy Reid‘s former players.
On a new episode of The Facility, Chase Daniel, former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and one of Andy Reid’s old players, sat down to talk NFL. Everything was rolling until the conversation hit Jalen Hurts. When asked if he’d build a franchise around the Eagles QB, the host didn’t even hesitate – nope. And Daniel? He doubled down.
“There are only four guys right now that I would take to start a franchise with, and quite honestly,” he said. Daniel then quickly backtracked a bit, saying, “Let me rephrase that. There are more than four guys that I would take above Jalen Hurts to start a franchise today.” Of course, Patrick Mahomes might have made his list. But Hurts wasn’t even close.

“I don’t want to start a franchise with Jalen Hurts. He might be 8, 9, 10 on that list. Maybe more.”

Daniel kept it real, adding, “I don’t want to start a franchise with Jalen Hurts. He might be 8, 9, 10 on that list. Maybe more. If I want to start a franchise today, and build a team around him, Jalen Hurts is not in the top 9 or 10 of those guys.” Now, that stings – especially when Jalen Hurts just led Philly all the way through a Wild Card win to beat the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.
But to be fair, Daniel, who is also a former Eagles quarterback, says it’s not hate. Back in January, he made it clear. “It can be harsh, but at sometimes it’s warranted when he doesn’t do the things they ask him to do. I actually think he’s playing extremely well for the stuff that they’re asking him to do. I’m not a big Jalen Hurts hater. I just want to see him let go of football in 50-50 ball situations.”
Although he pointed out one flaw – Hurts needs to trust those 50/50 ba-ls more – Daniel cleared that he isn’t the hater. So, call it tough love or just a brutal take. Either way, Hurts is used to being doubted. And time and again, he shows up and proves people wrong. Like this time, he won the Super Bowl against the Chiefs. And that’s why the franchise believes in him. But….here’s a but. Are the Eagles also looking for a QB in the upcoming draft?
What’s your perspective on:
Is Chase Daniel right to rank Jalen Hurts outside the top 10 QBs for building a franchise?
Have an interesting take?
Jalen Hurts’ team might be drafting a popular QB in 2025
Let’s be real. The Eagles don’t need a quarterback right now. Jalen Hurts is locked in. He’s a superstar fresh off an MVP cherry on top of a Super Bowl win. In fact, Philly has him under contract for the next four seasons. That’s stability most teams would kill for. So, there’s no drama and no guessing games. Even after trading away Kenny Pickett, they’re good. Additionally, Tanner McKee‘s still on the roster, and Dorian Thompson-Robinson just came in. So, there are solid backups as well.

But CBS Sports’ Mike Renner predicted the Eagles would draft Alabama QB Jalen Milroe at pick No. 64? Wait, what? Yeah, that raised some eyebrows. No doubt, Milroe’s a strong player. He had 16 passing and 20 rushing touchdowns in just 13 games last season. But does Philly need him? Not really. Why? Well, because there are more pressing needs that the team would want to pay attention to at the moment.

The D-line has got holes, the safety room is thin, and the tight end slot is just up in the air. Now, they could use another receiver. Maybe some help on the O-line, too. So, all in all, the quarterback is the one solid spot in the squad. But the rest of the spots definitely need attention in this year’s NFL Draft. We’ll take this rumor with a pinch of salt.
