The league announced Greenlaw’s suspension after Sunday’s game against the Seahawks. He was suspended after an incident in the second quarter, when Greenlaw headbutted Ernest Jones IV with his helmet, escalating an on-field confrontation between the two linebackers.

Greenlaw has been suspended without pay for one game for unsportsmanlike conduct. The league cited Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which prohibits conduct “contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.” The fact that Jones was not wearing a helmet when Greenlaw made contact made the incident even worse.

The NFL’s disciplinary action underscores its emphasis on player safety and maintaining control during heated moments in competition. The league used its new rule under which the Art McNally Gameday Central in New York can eject a player without even throwing a flag.

The suspension comes at an important point for the 49ers, who will need to adjust their defensive plans ahead of their October 19 matchup against the Washington Commanders. The linebacker will be eligible to return to San Francisco’s active roster on Tuesday, October 20, following the game.

His absence can put extra pressure on the 49ers’ LB squad as the team prepares for the next challenge on its schedule. Greenlaw has been an important piece of the Niners’ defense, and losing him for even one game could affect the unit’s preparation and decisions.

The suspension is also a reminder that being emotional during games can carry consequences long after the final whistle. While physicality is a main part of a linebacker’s play, the league draws a clear line between aggressive football and conduct that violates its sportsmanship rules.

This is not the first time the linebacker has been ejected. He also delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit on Los Angeles Chargers’ QB Justin Herbert. After the Broncos released him this year, he was also fined for taunting this season after a verbal exchange with Denver’s sideline and HC Sean Payton.

But Greenlaw is not without recourse. Under the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, he has the right to appeal the suspension.

Any appeal would be heard and decided by one of four jointly appointed hearing officers: Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson, Ron Rivera, or James Thrash. These officials are appointed and compensated by the NFL and the NFL Players Association to adjudicate appeals involving on-field player discipline.

Whether Greenlaw chooses to appeal remains to be seen. For now, the 49ers must prepare for their next game without him.
