The San Francisco 49ers won their 2nd preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers 41-17 on Thursday, August 20. However, their principal owner and CEO John “Jed” York. also had to deal with some contrasting news as he was apprehended over the weekend in East Palestine, Ohio. 

He was officially apprehended by the authorities on two separate misdemeanor charges, and the 45-year-old 49ers owner resolved the legal matter on Monday morning by pleading no contest to the 2 separate misdemeanor charges in Columbiana County Municipal Court.

The incident itself took place on Sunday, August 23, with the local authorities in a joint operation with the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force.

“San Francisco 49ers owner John “Jed” York was arrested in the Valley over the weekend and found guilty of two misdemeanor charges. York pleaded no contest Monday morning to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools,” read WKBN.com’s report.

An initial allegation was amended by the prosecutors to disorderly conduct, a fourth-degree misdemeanor under 2917.11, per Heavy.com’s Erik C. Anderson. Jed York had submitted a $5k bond initially after his arrest on August 23.

He was sentenced to 1 day in the Columbiana County Jail for each count, with the punishment running concurrently, while also crediting him with time already served over the weekend. Meaning that there was no jail time left to serve under the judgment, per Heavy.com.

“York received a $150 fine on the disorderly-conduct count and a $1,000 fine for possessing criminal tools. A court receipt shows he paid $1,285 total at 8:47 a.m. Monday. That included the $1,150 in criminal fines, $105 in court costs, a $25 bond surcharge, and a $5 warrant-to-discharge fee,” Heavy.com’s Erik C Anderson wrote. 

He also forfeited the $160 seized during the arrest to the human trafficking task force, with court records confirming all financial penalties were settled. 

Prior to this arrest on August 23, 2026, in East Palestine, Ohio, Jed York had never been arrested or charged with a crime. The Columbiana County misdemeanor case represents the first criminal arrest on his public record.

While Jed York mostly lives in California, managing the 49ers, his family maintains deep roots in the Mahoning Valley, Ohio. Jed York was born and raised in Youngstown (located within Mahoning County, Ohio) and graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School (Youngstown).

The DeBartolo-York family also established their real estate business in Youngstown, Ohio, and the franchise has used local Youngstown sports facilities for training in the past.

In 1977, Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. purchased the San Francisco 49ers for roughly $16 million, and since then the DeBartolo-York Family has owned the 49ers, who have won 5 Super Bowls.

However, since Jed York took over as the Team President at just 28 years old in 2008, they haven’t been able to win the Super Bowl. York officially became the Principal Owner of the 49ers after buying out enough of his mother’s (Marie Denise DeBartolo York) equity shares in March 2024, giving him controlling ownership of the San Francisco 49ers.

Do NFL guidelines await Jed York?

Now, even though the municipal court case is resolved legally, Jed York has yet to be reviewed under the NFL Personal Conduct Policy.

League guidelines state that team owners and execs are held to a higher standard than players. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has the authority to review any conduct against league guidelines. 

Past precedent shows how strict the NFL is in this regard. In 2014, the league suspended Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay for six games and issued a $500,000 fine following a misdemeanor plea. 

While day-to-day football-related operations of the 49ers are overseen by 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan, the front office faces the possibility of taking a hit on its corporate relationships as the 2026 season is about to start.
