The San Francisco 49ers have been on a bumpy ride this season with injuries targeting their quarterback spot. Brock Purdy, the once-reliable starter, is still sidelined with a toe injury that’s kept him out for three games, leaving Mac Jones to fill in. Jones has taken the reins with grit but also carries his own load of injuries.

General manager John Lynch offered some relief in his interview with KNBR. The backup quarterback, nursing knee and oblique bumps, looks ready for Sunday’s showdown in Tampa Bay. Lynch told KNBR that Jones is in good shape despite the injury report. “We feel pretty good about where he’s going to be,” GM said.

Jones started this stretch replacing Purdy and has reclaimed momentum, winning all three starts, including a gutsy 342-yard, two-touchdown outing over the Los Angeles Rams. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Jones was limited in practice on Wednesday, but did show up. Shanahan clarified they are carefully balancing Jones’s health to not push him past reasonable limits while still expecting him to lead the offense.

Meanwhile, Purdy, sidelined with a turf toe injury, missed practice again. Purdy has missed three of five games, but no IR talk yet. “It hasn’t been a thought on [placing him on] IR,” Shanahan said Wednesday. “He’s progressing.”

Should injuries pile up, rookie Adrian Martinez stands ready on the sidelines, though he has yet to take a regular-season snap. Martinez’s readiness is welcome insurance, but not a scenario the 49ers want to see tested. So, for now, Jones is in line to start. But with this week’s injury list, which reads like a who’s who of 49ers sidelined players, can he pull off another win?

49ers Injury Report

Beyond the quarterback chatter, the 49ers are continuously managing injury issues at key skill positions. Wide receivers Ricky Pearsall, with a knee injury, Jauan Jennings, with ankle and rib issues, and Jordan Watkins, with a calf injury, all remained sidelined again.

On defense, Alfred Collins and Yetur Gross-Matos are nursing knees and other aches. Trent Williams and Christian McCaffrey took the day off for rest. A few others joined Jones as limited participants, including CJ West and Upton Stout.

Tight end George Kittle remains sidelined with a hamstring injury that landed him on injured reserve early in the season. The good news from Lynch is that Kittle is progressing steadily and is expected to return to practice next week. This bodes well for his potential availability in Week 7 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Lynch also mentioned there’s a chance Jennings could play this Sunday against Tampa Bay, though nothing is set in stone. The team’s approach again mixes optimism with careful injury management to ensure Jennings isn’t jeopardized by rushing back.

Bottom line: Mac Jones is banged up but expected to lead the offense Sunday. The team is keeping Purdy’s status close to the vest.
