Who Is Tyler Stockton?

Born and raised in Linwood, New Jersey, Tyler Stockton started his football career as a player at the Hun School of Princeton. He played as a DL and was named to the all-state first team after his junior year. As a high school prospect, he was a four-star recruit and the third-best DT across the country. Stockton played for Notre Dame from 2009 to 2013; however, he only saw limited action in all four seasons.

Tyler’s coaching career began as a graduate assistant at UConn in 2014, under the head coach Bob Diaco. After spending two seasons there, he moved to Western Illinois as the DL coach and run game coordinator. Within the next two years, he was promoted to defensive coordinator. He joined the same role at Ball State in 2019 and spent five seasons there.

In his second season at Ball State, he helped the school win the MAC Championship and its first bowl win. The massive impact of the program led him to three Broyles Award nominations in 2020, 2022, and 2023. It also earned him the assistant head coach honor in 2022.

After five years with the program, he served as Boise State’s co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach for two seasons, 2024-2025. Tyler helped Boise State win the Mountain West championship in his first season and reach the CFP Quarterfinal at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.

Tyler Stockton’s Role on Michigan’s Coaching Staff

Tyler Stockton is currently hired as the safeties coach on Kyle Whittingham’s staff at Michigan. He would be joining the defensive coaching roster along with defensive coordinator Jay Hill, DL coach Lou Esposito, edge rusher coach Lewis Powell, LB coach Alex Whittingham, and DC coach Jernaro Gilford. They would be working as a unit to make the defense more physical and elite in coverage than other top schools in the country.

At just 35 years old, Stockton has already established himself as one of the most respected young defensive minds in college football. He would now bring twelve years of experience and the Broyles Award-caliber coaching to the Wolverines staff.
