Just a couple of days before South Carolina would kick off their 2025 season, heartbreaking news reached the Gamecocks’ roster. Defensive linebackers coach Travian Robertson had a horrible accident and was hospitalized, and the program began the season-opener with a heavy heart. The continued absence of defensive line coach Travian Robertson loomed large on the sidelines ever since.

On August 22, unfortunately, the coach got into a horrible car accident and was admitted to the Prisma Health Richland Hospital for two weeks. The injury occurred after being struck head-on by a driver who had been under the influence of alcohol, as reported by the statements provided by his lawyers. A leg injury was reported as well. After undergoing five surgeries for internal and external damage, he has been recovering well, making an emotional admission in his recent post.

“A little over five weeks ago, my entire world shifted for me and for my family,” Travian Robertson poured out his emotions on X. “It’s hard to put into words how much has changed, but one thing I know for sure: I’m grateful beyond measure to still be here. To be breathing, healing, and able to share my story. Thank you, God!”.

After spending two weeks in the hospital, including 10 days in the Intensive Care Unit, he was discharged on September 5. Travian Robertson has been on the coaching roster since 2023, and after the accident, the concerns for team prep had him going strong. He would be present for the team meetings on Zoom.

“It was good to get Travian home. I know his family was excited to have him home. I know he was excited to get out of the hospital,” Shane Beamer had said during a press conference ahead of the Vanderbilt game. Meanwhile, Jordan Dave has stepped up to Travian’s role as he recovers from his injuries.

When will Travian Robertson be back on the sidelines?

With the positive inputs about his health, it appears that coach Robertson will soon be back on the sidelines to lead his roster. On September 16th, Shane Beamer provided another update regarding his health. “As far as Travian goes, he’s making progress,” Beamer had explained. “He wasn’t in the building last Thursday, but he was over here in the parking lot after practice.”

The players and the coaching staff were glad to see him recovering steadily. Beamer added. “We’re in communication with him and talking regularly, and he’s getting better every day.” Much to the Gamecock’s delight, from the last two Wednesdays, he has been watching the practice drills from the balcony.

A former South Carolina athlete, back in 2007-11, he played under Steve Spurrier as a team captain in 2011. After wrapping up his collegiate career, he went on to the pro league and was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL draft. Over his pro career, he played for the Falcons, Seattle Seahawks, and the Washington Commanders.

Starting his coaching journey at Georgia State in the capacity of a graduate assistant in 2017, he switched to Albany as a defensive line coach, then back to Georgia State. In 2023, he went back to his Alma mater, the Gamecocks.
