Ole Miss’s title dreams took a hit with a sudden speed bump as their star running back went down with an injury. After torching Georgia and Tulane’s defenses, he went out with an injury against Miami. Let’s find out exactly what happened to him and whether Logan Diggs is taking over for him.

Pete Golding’s team takes an early hit in the second quarter when Kewan Lacy goes down with an injury. After Miami went up 3-0 in the first quarter, Lacy took a handoff from Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss and ran through Miami’s DL.

Once everything was clear, Lacy rushed down the field for a 73-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter. Though he finished the run, he was noticeably slowing near the goal line.

“Kewan Lacy’s right hamstring is being evaluated and treated on the sideline,” added The Rebel Walk. “Logan Diggs is in the game to start the drive.”

With Lacy sidelined, Logan Diggs entered the game, serving as Ole Miss’s second-string running back behind him. He is in his second season and brings in experience from playing at Notre Dame in 2021 and 2022 before moving to LSU and then Ole Miss. This season, he carried the ball for 179 rushing yards and four touchdowns while contributing in the passing game with five receptions for 45 yards.

But replacing an extraordinary player like Kewan Lacy won’t be that straightforward.

When everything is at stake for Ole Miss, let’s wait and see how Diggs shows up. Lacy’s 73-yard touchdown run was the longest run given up by Miami all season. Plus, his rushing TD is the longest for the Rebels since Ulysses Bentley’s 89-yd TD in the 2014 Egg Bowl.

Lacy was seen holding his helmet in his hands on the sidelines after leaving the game. Cameras caught him wearing a black sleeve on his right leg while he received treatment from the Ole Miss medical staff during halftime. Before going into halftime, head coach Pete Golding gave an injury update on Lacy.

“They’re going to look at him, so we’ll figure it out at halftime,” Golding said.

Before going down with an injury, he accumulated 75 of Ole Miss’s 145 total first-half yards. This man entered the game ranking third nationally in rushing yards with 1,464 and second in rushing touchdowns with 23.

On top of it, Lacy recorded six 100-yard games, including a career-best 224 yards against Florida. He scored at least one touchdown in all but one game this season and recorded three games with three rushing touchdowns. At the same time, ranking second nationally with 295 carries and forcing 88 missed tackles, according to Pro Football Focus.

Now, even if Miami lost him on the field, they gained him back for one last season.

Kewan Lacy makes his way back to Ole Miss

Kewan Lacy’s future took a dramatic turn as the Ole Miss RB went out with an injury just before reaching the final. The severity of his injury and the return timeline have not yet been confirmed. But one thing is pretty sure: that Ole Miss is going to be his destination for the 2026 season.

“I’m so thankful to be here and for all the support from my coaches, fans, and teammates,” Lacy said in a press conference. “I give all the thanks to God and just keep going, keep going up.”

This explosive running back isn’t eligible to get drafted in the 2026 season. So, he decided to move back to Ole Miss. Lacy initially enrolled at Missouri and rushed for 104 yards as a freshman. He then entered the portal and joined Ole Miss as a three-star transfer, as per 247Sports.

But under Lane Kiffin’s guidance and RB coach Kevin Smith, he shone bright. Despite their move to LSU, he is sticking with the program, showing his trust in Ole Miss.

Even Ole Miss’s backfield got a significant boost with an offensive weapon. He totaled 110 all-purpose yards and two rushing touchdowns in Ole Miss’s playoff quarterfinal against Georgia. Now, let’s wait and see when Lacy returns to the field.
