Bill Belichick has come far from being at the gunpoint of the fans and veterans who vehemently doubted his ability to mount a recruitment success at the Tar Heels camp. They were not delusional, though. The NFL and college football work much differently when it comes to recruiting. But Belichick, with the constant support of his general manager cum best buddy, Michael Lombardi, filled the gap and boasted a top-tier 2025 class. They are also faring well in the 2026 cycle, grabbing a 13th-ranked spot as per the ESPN CFB national recruiting coordinator Craig Haubert. But coming to 2027, Coach Josh Heupel pulled a rug.
Rashad Streets, a three-star prospect EDGE out of Millbrook High School in Raleigh, has been a long-time target of Belichick and his staff. He took a recent visit to the Chapel Hills this spring as well. Everything was going smoothly, but Tennessee got in the way. After his last visit to Knoxville, the 230 lb prospect seemed to be in awe of what Heupel has in store for him.
“The environment was wonderful,” Streets told ON3. “It felt like a big family gathering. It was my mom’s first time visiting, and she really enjoyed it as well, getting to meet the staff.”

“I think what excites me most about Tennessee is how they are consistently getting better with Coach Heupel and their ability to get top talent from North Carolina and develop those players really well.” Streets continued to chime in on what made the Vols stand out. Not being able to retain the talent’s home comes off as a bullet to Belichick and maybe a future lesson to stick by.
However, it’s still not the end of the world for Belichick and his squad. Not only did they have a lineup of talents for 2027, including West Coast talent Skylar Robinson, but they have done enough to spark a good impression on Rashad as well.
Rashad Steets didn’t close the door on UNC
The high-end four-star prospect took a trip to the Chapel Hills in the middle of March. His impressive high school profile garnered him a flurry of offers from schools like Michigan State, Auburn, Florida, Arkansas State, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, Notre Dame, Oregon, Penn State, SMU Virginia State, and more. But receiving an offer from the Tar Heels was special.
Being close to his family and visiting them as often as he wanted was a driving force in his interest in UNC. And the interest was strongly vice versa. His incredible records of 124 tackles, 35.5 for loss, 26 sacks, and 31 quarterback hits last season have been the highlight of his resume and were enough to blow Belichick’s mind. “Yeah, they like me primarily on the edge. But they mentioned they like that my high school moves me around at different positions on the line, and that’s what they can see me doing in their system as well,” the kid broke down UNC’s interest in him.
“As of now, I’m planning to visit South Carolina, Penn State, Tennessee, Florida, Miami, Auburn, Alabama, Oregon, and Notre Dame. I’m still working on the dates with my family,” Rashad said back in March, clearly indicating the dilemma of his mind. Heupel makes the best out of this dilemma, solidifying their chance to swoop another elite commit by this fall.

Has Bill Belichick lost his recruitment magic, or is Tennessee just too tempting for prospects?
