Playing two sports at the D1 level might sound like a flex, but it can be unforgiving. That is the case for Texas outfielder and safety Jonah Williams. He was on a good run in the ongoing baseball season, but an early injury following a risky dive has now brought an end to it. Football head coach Steve Sarkisian, however, will still have to wait for a green light.
According to Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods, Williams will undergo shoulder surgery soon. The report mentions that the safety’s odds to come back in time for the football season are good, but fans and Sarkisian have enough reasons to be worried.

This is the second time Williams has to undergo surgery. And, he is an elite recruit set to benefit the Longhorns, coming in as the No. 1 safety of the 2026 class. Since Michael Taffe is in the draft, Williams is one of the candidates to be his successor. He even covered for him last season in the Citrus Bowl. Now, there’s no guarantee he’d be at his 100%. The recovery process means he will be forced to sit out of spring practices and will be pretty limited during those brutal summer intensive conditioning sessions.
Jonah Williams has a long history of injuries. He came to Texas still reeling from a collarbone injury that ended his prep career before its time. He also suffered a hamstring injury last year, which delayed his start for this season. Later in the football season last year, he dinged up his shoulder. That same injury flared up this season with that dive, which has now required surgery. Williams had a strong showing at baseball this year, coming back from all these injuries. But there is always a risk of production reaching a slump because of so many hits.

So for now, Jonah’s focus shifts from the outfield to the rehab room. While his baseball stats are frozen at that impressive .304 average for the year, his status for the football season will be a big storyline heading into summer and fall camps. Last season, he recorded nine tackles in 155 snaps. Before going down with the injury, Williams was regarded as one of the best athletes at the university. He was batting at an impressive .304 with seven hits and four RBIs through just eight games this spring. Baseball coach Schlossnagle will have a headache trying to make up for his loss in the lineup. Fortunately, Sarkisian and Co. still have a suitable room of players.
The Longhorns safety room if Jonah Williams doesn’t return to his 100%
The main guy expected to step up is Jelani McDonald. He’s a senior who really found his groove late last season. He has 80 total tackles (49 of them solo) and snagged 3 interceptions. So, the coaches already trust him to handle the heavy lifting at boundary safety. Williams would have found it tough to beat the senior for his job, but he had the potential to do so.
Another possible candidate is Derek Williams Jr. He gave the Longhorns a fright after entering the transfer portal this year, but withdrew his name soon after. He’s a veteran, knows the system inside out, and was a crucial piece of the defensive lineup for 2026. Over three years, he’s amassed 76 total tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble. That should make things work if Jonah isn’t 100% by kickoff.
Over at free safety, the Longhorns have Xavier Filsaime. They’ve also got young talent like Zelus Hicks waiting in the wings. Even if Jonah needs more time to rehab that shoulder, the safety room is deep enough to keep the defense playing at a high level until the playoffs.
