Even before the kick-off, this game turned ugly. It’s Florida, coming with a big blow to USF, which dropped them from the AP Poll, versus LSU, fresh off a 17-10 win against Clemson, riding high at 2-0. A game full of hope and excitement turned into pregame tension when players from both teams engaged in a nasty scuffle, leading officials to penalize both sides for this conduct. Now, with potential ejections hanging in the balance, the rivalry’s intensity just took a weird shape.

Well, roughly 90 minutes before the game began, Florida and LSU players got into a heated altercation during warmups. Now, the tension started when Florida players were seen on LSU’s side of the field, sparking a heated argument that drew most of both teams into the middle. And that’s when LSU fans responded with loud “L-S-U!” chants, while fans were booing Florida players when they passed the student section. Things got weird when officials threw a flag as a warning, but couldn’t stop the chaos.
Seconds later, a smaller scuffle erupted near the sideline, with LSU players celebrating as the intensity increased. Fans again chanted “L-S-U!” amplifying the rivalry’s already charged atmosphere. The warning flag, the crowd’s energy, and Florida’s hostile reception made the pregame scene almost as intense as the game itself. But officials intervened to prevent things from escalating. And that’s when things got to another level when referees threw unsportsmanlike conduct flags on both teams, according to ESPN’s Booger McFarland.

So, what does this flag truly imply? The new rule has significant implications: a second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in a game results in immediate ejection. Given the elevated stakes, coaches Brian Kelly and Billy Napier will be emphasizing discipline to their players, even amidst the intense rivalry. This means less rough play and more focus on clean execution; every tackle, every play, and every moment must be precise, because a single mistake could be decisive.

But the drama isn’t new for them. Back in 2016, LSU and Florida had a pregame scuffle before the Gators won 16-10 on a last-second goal-line stand. LSU then dominated, winning five straight until Florida’s 27-16 victory last year. Though Florida leads the all-time series 34-32-2, momentum has shifted. This year’s game could be crucial, particularly with Napier under pressure and Kelly aiming for a playoff spot.
LSU or Florida: Which team has an edge?
Now, this game feels like a turning point for Florida, as a loss would drop Billy Napier’s record to 20-21 in Gainesville and likely test the fans’ patience even further after the USF setback. The Gators have history on their side, though; last year’s 27-16 victory snapped a five-game losing streak to LSU and fueled a late-season surge, including wins over No. 9 Ole Miss, Florida State, and Tulane, resulting in an 8-5 finish. Another win in Baton Rouge could potentially quiet the growing concerns about Napier’s position, just as it did the previous year.

Well, for now, LSU is not in a tough spot. As they are at No. 3 in the AP Poll after Week 3, which is their best since December 2019, thanks to their 17-10 victory over Clemson and a 23-7 win against Louisiana Tech. On top of that, LSU’s defense has been a rock for them. They are ranked 15th nationally in both scoring defense (allowing 8.5 points per game) and run defense (giving up just 44.5 yards). So, now you know who has the upper hand.
But Florida presents a mix of potential and uncertainties. Even though QB DJ Lagway has shown promise early on, completing 74.5% of his passes with four touchdowns, this will be his first real test in a high-stakes SEC environment. Even RB Jadan Baugh has brought balance to the Gators’ offense, yet the stakes are pretty high. Now, it’s interesting to see how Florida copes with LSU’s pressure and turns this game.
