This development comes just two months after Vitale, 87, shared an encouraging update on social media in August, revealing that his recent blood tests came back “very good” and that the immunotherapy treatments he has been receiving are “very effective in wiping out the cancer.”

Vitale’s fight against cancer began in 2021 with a melanoma diagnosis. Although he later battled lymphoma and was eventually declared cancer-free, his relief was short-lived. In 2023, another setback arrived when doctors diagnosed him with vocal cord cancer. Just a year later, Vitale faced yet another hurdle as cancer was discovered in his lymph nodes, requiring surgery to address the condition.

Vitale’s fans have never been ones to leave him fighting alone. Last year, when doctors grew concerned about the readings on the machines monitoring his condition, they asked him to spend the night in the hospital. With his vitals raising red flags, the medical team wanted to keep him under close observation to ensure he received the care he needed.

The analyst pleaded to go home, but doctors insisted he remain hospitalized for further tests, leaving him with no choice but to agree. And when his family had to leave for the night, the legendary ESPN broadcaster suddenly found himself alone, overwhelmed by the moment and breaking down in tears.

“There were times I didn’t know if I’d wake up the next morning,” Vitale said. “I remember that night in the hospital, my family left and I cried, thinking I’d never see them again. A nurse came in and said, ‘Dick, what’s wrong? Why are you so upset? You’re going to beat this. You’re a fighter.’ She gave me hope.”

Once the nurse stepped out, Vitale reached for the phone lying beside his bed, which had remained untouched since the early hours of the morning.

“I looked at my phone. I hadn’t touched it in like seven or eight hours and no one outside of the family really knew what I was going through (that day,)” Vitale said.

Alone in the cold silence of the hospital, Vitale thought he had no one by his side. But one glance at his phone changed everything. The warmth of messages from colleagues, family, and friends reminded him that even in his darkest moments, he wasn’t fighting cancer alone.

“There were messages from (Tennessee coach) Rick Barnes, (Arkansas coach John) Calipari, Coach K (former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski), (former Villanova coach and ESPN analyst) Jay Wright, (ESPN CEO) Jimmy Pitaro, so many of my ESPN friends—all telling me to keep fighting.

“Every day, Rick Barnes sent me a prayer. Every day for three or four months. Can you believe that? It gave me strength.”

The battle against cancer was never his to fight alone, thanks to the unwavering support of everyone who has crossed his path. And now, as he faces yet another challenge, his fans have once again rallied around him, refusing to let him fight alone.
